The game is quite special for me and my friends. It's not that it's a good game (far from that actually) but four characters, namely Zia, Neftis, Fergus and Hank look EXACTLY like my aforementioned friends (believe me, the resemblance is very strong, especially for Zia). We had a lot of fun because of that. One day I complained that there was no character for me and then my Zia-like friend said: "Oh, come on! You look just like Ghor, he is only a little bit more handsome than you" And that's how I got a new nickname

Yeah that's what I've heard but still, I've heard that your first winning game can last 100+ hours. That's insane for something you can die and lose all your progress in.

Personally I couldn't get into it because of both the length and because there was for disincentive grinding forever. (clock in ADOM, food clock in DCSS, forced depth in Sil, etc.)

Angband sounds rough, at least with Sil if you get far and die a winning game is only 5-10 hours

Sil 1.2.0 is out and general consensus is that the early to mid game is a lot easier now. Try doing some reading on the Sil forums. I'm getting to the early-mid game reliably now.

Started Sil, it seems pretty cool. I'm only an hour or two into the game and im already limited to dl5 or lower which is kinda neat. Add me to your multitap so you can keep tabs on my adventures

Have you given Sil a real try yet? It started out as a branch of angband but has mostly become a new game by now aside from still using the "use stairs to reload level" mechanic. It's usually considered a much better game though, and is much shorter (20 levels instead of 100) with a mechanic to force you into lower dungeon levels as time goes on so maybe a good thing to try if you're getting burned out on angband proper. I'm actually considering diving into it myself, let me know if you're interested and we can do it together

i never got seriously into angband like i did with nethack/doomrl/crawl but iirc doesn't the game give you a message upon entering a level telling you what kind of risk/reward to expect? if you just want to grind in peace couldn't you just exit and re-enter the level if the risk/reward is high?

Angband isn't so tough, take it slow and scum for resists and items you need. don't progress until you feel ready. IIRC levels 30-40 are the best for grinding for items
