Well, I haven't read any fantasy books, other than LOTR and Eragon, but I don't like fantasy-themed video games because the aesthetics are less interesting and harder to relate with. I see two people in a scifi game arguing over a broken ship engine, and I can think "hey, that's like with my car!", but when two people in a fantasy game argue over a magical sword or something, it's too foreign for me to believe in. And I tend to like guns over swords, anyway. I agree, the "medieval" thing is overwrought. It seems scifi can be a larger multitude of things: space opera, speculative fiction, dystopian, etc., but all fantasy seems to just be LOTR rehashed and rehacked with less enthusiasm and imagination. At least, on the video game end of things. I'm not sure in the literary world, so I'll take your word for it.

Yeah, comments suck. You can add me on Steam, if you like

The documentary I watched dipped some into his "Exegesis". Pretty spectacular, if you ask me! They've only published like, what, 2,000 of the 6,000 pages? While I can see the small market and large cost of such a book, it'd be wonderful to see the whole thing. Maybe in a series, perhaps?

Kurt Vonnegut's my favorite author! Didn't mention him, as a lot of people are torn up about whether or not his books really constitute "science fiction". I mean, for god's sake, he was honorary President of the Humanitarian Society, a spot previously held by Asimov! Confuses me to find him in the fiction section so often when half of his work at least belongs in Scifi. Anyway, Cat's Cradle is my favorite novel of all time, and I just finished reading Timequake and God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian, both of which were very good (and similar, which I found strange and amusing). I've also read Slaughterhouse-Five, and I'm looking forward to reading his other, lesser known work.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've heard of a few of those. I believe Theodore Sturgeon was part of the inspiration for Vonnegut's character Kilgore Trout (hence the fish names). I've heard of Orson Scott Card and the Ender's series. It's hard to really tell which science fiction books are good, and which are just okay, or merely palatable to the LCD. I've heard a lot of praise for Ender's Game and Neuromancer, but then again, I've also heard a lot of praise for The Hunger Games, which was okay, I guess. I usually trust "classic" books lists for opinions on which book to read next, but that only extends so far, and usually not into scifi. I can find so many reputable resources on which Hemingway book is best to start with, but so few on which Asimov book to start with. A damn shame.

It's a great community on it's own, aside from all the giveaways! I can vouch for that, because I usually don't join forums (weird Lord of the Flies hierarchies and bad grammar abound, eh?), but these group of folks are something else. Come in sometime, you won't (or may not, at least) be disappointed! And speaking of fantasy RPGs, I find it hard to get into old-school, DND-based RPGs, ala Neverwinter Nights and such. Neutral, Evil, Good, Chaotic, Lawful, stats, blah blah blah. It all runs together to me. While some lament new-school RPGs for watering things down, I can appreciate certain conveniences.
