My ten favorite games of 2016

Like 2015 before it, 2016 was an amazing year for video games. I’m just making sure to emphasize how great it was for games specifically; 2016 has otherwise been a nightmare. But let’s not dwell on that! This year has brought us a handful of stan...

I really like Guardian Heroes, but it can get a bit pricey. I think that Die Hard Arcade is cheaper, and it's just as fun, if a bit short maybe. Dynamite Cop on Dreamcast is the sequel, and I also enjoyed the hell out of that. My cousin and I co oped both games.

If you like Saturn Bomberman, I think Saturn Bomberman Fight is generally more of the same, Bomberman Wars is a TRPG. My cousin and I really enjoyed Saturn Bomberman, but we got frustrated with a part near the endgame where you have to beat 4 levels in a row without saving. I guess we're just struggling so much cause it's both of our first real Bomberman games, I've played Bomberman 64 before, but that's hardly the same. I see that you imported Saturn Bomberman, very good. I really don't see why it's so much more expensive here than Japan, when there's very minimal Japanese and the game is extremely playable without knowing a single word. I guess something like a low print run and just generally being desired, be it for the longbox or what.

Back to AO, it really depends on if you want to pay for a CIB copy, or if you want to just buy the disc and make your own custom case (if you want to go this route, check out cover project). Personally, I hate the DVD custom cases for the Saturn, they really clash with my actual longboxes, so I got rid of all of mine and just get CIB games...plus, I care a whole lot more about CIB disc games than CIB cart games (though I have made custom cases for my N64 games, and most of my Genesis and SMS games are CIB).

Good luck, and remember, Segata Sanshiro is watching

Admittedly, Albert Odyssey has its flaws, mainly that it swaps out a character halfway through the game with no real reason or explanation, and I feel it's a very likable character getting replaced by an...okay character, and the endgame has 4 main bosses that literally take like 20 minutes each or something insane. Other than that though, I really enjoyed it. I probably have it rated a bit too high, a four star rating would make more sense with my minor issues with the game, but I really did enjoy the hell out of it besides that. I definitely am hesitant about ever recommending importing an RPG unless you're comfortable with Japanese, even it it'd probably be way cheaper. All I can say is watch some gameplay footage, like maybe the battles or something non-spoilery, to see if you like it. I mean, it's more or less just a very basic JRPG with not much special added, but it's quite charming. It definitely helps that the Saturn was kind of lacking in RPGs, and this is certainly a great RPG. I don't think it's anywhere near Panzer Dragoon Saga's price (I got PDS CIB for $150, but that felt like a once in a life time deal. I hear about people sometimes getting it at yard sales for less, but I have never actually seen those around here), so I guess you don't have as much invested it in if you don't like it.

Honestly, I kind of was indifferent to a lot of Panzer Dragoon Saga. I did beat it, but the ending was garbage, it felt like it was leading up to something that ultimately never happened, or they ran out of time/funding. The story felt kind of weak as well, but the battle system...man, the battle system is phenomenal. The game generally is pretty damn easy too, for what it's worth. I didn't get a single game over the entire game.

If you want to continue importing, Deep Fear is a lot like Resident Evil I hear, and it's English dubbed, exactly like RE. There's stuff like Sexy Paradius or Darius Collection (or Silhouette Mirage) if you're into shmups, Clockwork Knight 1+2, Bug 1+2, and Astal if you like platformers. Personally I like the RE1 port on Saturn a bit better, but I also prefer RE2/RE3/CVX DC to all other versions (the JP version is uncensored). I feel like I have to plug NiGHTs and Xmas NiGHTs, even though I'm not the biggest fan. You might want to try out Legend of Oasis if you liked Beyond Oasis, personally I generally like it better. Obviously you also have the cheap imports like Daytona USA/Outrun/Space Harrier

I enjoyed Spelunky, but certainly not at the levels you did. It definitely grew on me and when I was able to skip worlds, my enjoyment skyrocketed.

Gotta follow what excites you, and the newest stuff is of course the most exciting. There's one thing I do miss by being chronicly behind the times: playing a game at release and being a part of that initial surge of enthusiasm when the community first starts talking about it and sharing in the freshness. I think the last time I was part of that first-wave was Portal 2.

Don't worry about it! I have an EXTREMELY specific and particular way of posting here. I'll only reply to comments on my page if I find a reason to post a self-update. That means sometimes I leave convos hanging for months on end until I make another personal note. Oh, and I will always, indubitably reply to a comment posted on my page. Which means: if you ever find me annoying or you get tired of chatting with me, just don't respond and cut the reply chain. That's all it takes. And I'm telling you this because I 100% won't mind when it happens. In fact I expect it at some point.

I'll start off with the most casually inane and off-the-wall post. Most often a random "Happy Backloggiversary" if I catch someone's profile on their ring day (sound familiar? ). If the person responds, I'm like, "Hey, I'll run with this." You're more than kind to humour me this far along. You've been a top-tier Backloggery member forever, so I feel pretty lucky to get to know you a little with these chats.

I think I give 3 a lot more shit than it deserves, but it's still by far my weakest Yakuza. It just...the first half is like...a LOT of filler, but once it gets going, I feel like it's pretty good. I think that if the filler was cut out, it'd be a far better game. You'd think that I'd like 3 more, since it was my first Yakuza game, but...nope. I actually don't think 1 has aged well really, and definitely think the English dub is very...ehhh. I actually got a rather hilarious audio loop when I was streaming it and forgot to mute my stream, so it was like "WHAT THE FUCK...WHAT THE FUCK YOU DOING?" looping for like 15 seconds. I mean, the English dub is just a lot of times...tiresome, because of all the excessive swearing. I like the JP dubs a lot better, even if I can't really understand them (I've picked up a few words from playing so much Yakuza, though). I think I have a 1TB HDD on my Ps3, which is strangely plenty of space compared to needing 4TB on my PS4. Now that externals are finally coming to PS4, I may eventually get a 6 or 8TB, especially if PS4 allows you to use both combined like Xbox One does.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna probably forget my replay of 1 on PS2 and probably replace it with Kiwami once that comes out. If Sega does Kiwami 2 (which I heard a few months ago that they wanted to do, and do 3-5 PS4), I'd definitely recommend that over 2, unless somehow they take up a lot of cool stuff from 2 in it.

I have, and I own every Japanese game except obviously 1 + 2 HD on Wii U, which I hear bombed hard anyway and the PS3 version is better. I've played some of the first PSP game, but I haven't gotten very far in it, or the other import games, because the tutorial is kind of hard to get past when it's in Japanese. I guess it can be trial and errored, since you can't really lose (I think), but doing trial and error until I do it right doesn't really appeal to me.

Actually, what's really interesting is if you have Ishin save data, or even system data (as in if you just install it), it gets you some bonus items in Yakuza 0 (which I actually beat the game without using them and I don't think I ever actually used them), and part of Dead Souls having some Kenzan footage in the credits.

Also I'll tell you right now that similarly to Yakuza 0 having some references to other games (like 1, 2, and 4), 5 has references to 1 and 2 (mostly 2), and having played all those games and catching those made me smile and love the games even more

How are you liking Yakuza 0? I just beat it a few days ago, and loved the shit out of it. I want to go back for some substories later, maybe do a NG+, and probably stream it eventually.

I also wanted to share [Link] if you don't plan on getting Kiwami (you should), but really, I don't think there's a good reason to get Yakuza 1 when we're getting Kiwami. Do you have any interest in 5 or 6 when that comes out?

If you couldn't tell (and if Rhys hasn't told you), I'm like...#1 Backloggery Yakuza fan. It's probably surpassed RE and Sonic as my favorite IP. But RE and Sonic may start making a comeback with RE7 (about halfway done, but liking it), and Sonic Mania, but it's gonna be hard, I like EVERY Yakuza game I've played.

That's cool too! I'm rather envious of people like yourself who can keep a clean backlog without enforcing strict guidelines while being so free-minded about what to play. For some time I used to be similar, but that mindset is what got me to the 200+ backlog I'm currently staring down. I don't mind (most) of the unfinished games in my collection, it'll just take a while to get through them. On the bright side, having such a big backlog makes me feel better about my disinterest in modern vidya, and it helps me avoid spending money on new consoles. It's so much easier to keep focused (with blinders on) when I'm not actively looking for the new stuff.

I see most of your wishlist is current gen, a lot in PS4. Of course, you already have a truly impressive collection that spans decades, but I'm wondering: Do you feel there's any specific gaps in your retro collection that you might address at some point? I sometimes find it tough deciding the balance between retro to mid-era to modern gaming. There's always more games and always less time...

Does Huey (that's the paint can Navi's name, right? get less repetitive as the game goes on? I played a bit, enough to get one paint upgade, and he mentioned the same exact thing like three times in the span of a minute. The game does seem a lot better than Sticker Star, I just wish we could get just a plain RPG Paper Mario again.

This fall I performed major re-structuring to how I plan out my gaming schedule. I tallied up a list of all the major series I want to play and ordered them based on how many games I have left to tackle. I'm counting Megami Tensei as a very broad "series," so all the SMT, Persona, and spin-offs get grouped into one, which pretty handily placed it at the top of the list!

So, jamming SMT games will be a high priority for me. I'm also keeping a six-month cool-down between games in the same series for variety (helps me avoid series burnout), so it'll be closer to summer before I pick up another one.

I'm thinking it will be Persona 3, and since I'm crazy I'll get a copy of the original release despite owning a copy of FES. Only because I want to experience the "first cut" to the game before moving on to the remakes (eventually...). Only time will tell how much I end up hating the PS2 version's AI, haha.

Do you have a way in particular for choosing what games to play?

Yo I beat Digital Devil Saga 2. Here's what I think. First off: final boss breakdown. DDS1's final boss was more badass-looking, but DDS2's final boss got way better music (and its visual design was still cool in a bizarre way).

I like DDS2 more than the first on a few fronts. I really enjoy the themes explored in its narrative, some of which reminded me of Metal Gear Solid 2--one of my favourite games ever, so I already liked thinking about those concepts.

The sequel feels so much more eventful. DDS1 is downright glacial in pace when comparing exposition. The slow pacing worked well for DDS1, which made a balancing act out of introducing the user to the in-game world while building a mystery around it. DDS1 intentionally meanders the user through the story while answering as few questions as possible.

It's too bad the first game can be summarized in a sentence or two then immediately shed while DDS2 catapults through its series of events. They both do their thing well, but there's more substance to DDS2. Though I bet the devs were clever and planted little tidbits into the story of DDS1 that would only be appreciable on a replay of the series after learning everything in DDS2.

Along with the story pacing, even the dungeons felt much faster to complete in 2--except the final dungeon, which upped the challenge for me and costed a third of my total play-time. Good thing the final dungeon's music is some of the best in the game.

Weighing the two soundtracks is difficult. The amazing combination of jazz and metal in the first game was one of the initial things to win me over, but the mainly electronic focus of the sequel might be the tighter package. They're both great so I'd rather not choose.

As a last point...I'll admit I'm personally not a fan of all the identity politics proliferating in today's society...But, nevertheless, I found it very interesting that DDS2 has not one but several multi-gendered characters. In a game from 2005. Really does credit to show the uniqueness of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Though that particular uniqueness might be threatened if a bunch of nu-age game devs decide to start ham-fisting gender issues into their games.

Oh, I didn't know you already had a friend vouching for the game. Heh, in that case, you really don't need to listen to my weak-willed recollections. At first I figured you had picked it up randomly and were debating if it's worth the playthrough or not.
