How unfortunate this remake never made it outside of Japan, but thanks to emulation and reproductions, this can be enjoyed by English speakers!

☆★★★★ The best way I can explain this game is to say that it's heroin in plastic. Pure, intense, fast-paced, violent heroin. I was a wee lad when I first picked this game up and, even to this day, I was never a fan of racers save for the Mario Kart series, Forza and Gran Turismo. But this is not just racing. This is a whole new experience that no other game or series has ever offered before, a pure classic and quite possibly my favorite racing game to date. You can't go wrong with Road Rash 3.

Oh hey, I see you're doing the Phantasy Star II. I have such mixed feelings about the game, but overall I'm really glad they made it/I played it. Although as a kid I really had trouble getting into it cause it's so damn hard; it took me waiting until Phantasy Star IV to REALLY become a fan of the series. For better or worse the games really did some interesting things.

I think what always struck me as so fascinating was that while everyone else was doing typical fantasy, PS was doing science fantasy, which you really didn't see much of back then. Even Final Fantasy only had a tiny bit of it in IV and the suggestion of it in VI. I wonder if that's why FFVII struck a chord with so many people, since it was a big departure in a plethora of ways. I DO know that's why Shin Megami Tensei Persona caught my attention so hard. Modern setting, different approach to combat, heavy plot.. (just a shame it's dungeon crawling segments were garbage).

Anyways, have fun with PS2. If you liked the story and think you can stomach a revisit, there's the (slightly awkward) translation of the PS2 remake of it as well.

Thanks, I quite enjoyed it! Can't wait to get to the other games in the series, especially Breath of Fire III.

I wish you luck in completing Phantasy Star II. I'll admit I attempted a playthrough years ago, and failed. Maybe I should pick it up again... I remember hating the combat so much though.

Haha, I had a similar method before. When I realise I don't play some game for a really long period I just remove it from "now playing" list and get back to it the other time when I feel like it.

Just saw you playing Dragon Quest Heroes. As someone who's been on the fence about it, was it any good? I like Dynasty Warriors but I was really disappointed in Hyrule Warriors cause the bosses were horrible and I didn't like the villain lady (forgot her name).

I saw on a Star Soldier video that there are warps. Is it considered cheating if you use them? Like, if you've already beaten the stages in between warp points?

I can't believe they released a collection of Caravan shooting games on the Super Famicom. That'd be great to get a repro of, but it's cheaper to just get Star Force, Star Soldier, and Starship Hector separately.

I'm hoping I can give those three games a full chance. I need to stop being so damn fickle with my games.

I don't recall the level I beat him at last time, but I do know levels have a HUGE impact on your attack accuracy. I had a lot of the game's damage mechanics figured out back in the day but I lost it to a hard drive crash about a decade ago. Whoops.

Yes! Scheherazade is actually in the game, too! The town she's from (Celestern) also has NPCs that resemble Gun Meca and Coronya. The second town (Horizon Gate) is populated by Flying Dragon/Hiryu No Ken characters such as Rick/Ryuhi and Gengai. There's likely some other references in the game that I'm not too familiar with.

I have a feeling that "Culture Brain" meant to imply that the games were at least partly educational, as their worlds touch upon various mythologies and fables and folklore. Little Ninja Brothers has a number of references to Journey to the West, and the celestial beings are all based on the Chinese Zodiac (Mouchee Mouse, Wise Stallion, Cheerful Snake Brothers, Rogee Rabbit, etc), for instance. Even Chinaland vaguely resembles China in terms of topography and the shape of the game's world.

If you do stream Super Ninja Boy at some point, I'll probably pop in sometime.

Super Chinese 3 plays like a less capable Super Ninja Boy. It uses the same engine as Ninja Boy 2 for the Game Boy (which was localized as well) and Super Chinese Land 3 for the Game Boy, albeit with a lot more flicker and slowdown. It's not bad, but it's really vague at points. I'd love to see the entire series localized (the 3rd SNES title and the SNES fighting game are really quite good)

And have fun with Police Quest II. It's probably the best in the series. Despite the rigidness, it feels the most like a Sierra adventure game. The less said about "Open Season" the better!

Congrats on beating Little Ninja Brothers!

Before I realized the importance of your character's level in Culture Brain games and the power of the Boo Bomb item in boss fights, King Gulp was one of those bosses that took several hundred save states to beat. Thankfully nowadays I know much more about the game and how to properly win fights, but that doesn't really make him any less cheap! "Whump!" is an outright unfair attack, and it doesn't help that he uses it twice per turn!

Also, if you have the means to play it, I'd highly, HIGHLY recommend Super Ninja Boy for the SNES, which is another game in the Super Chinese series just like Little Ninja Brothers. It's probably my favourite game and definitely my favourite obscure little gaming treasure. The encounter rate is infuriatingly high at times, but the combat is better than Little Ninja Brothers (a bit more River City Ransom-ish) and it's a bit more polished.

There's a GBA remake of Little Ninja Brothers as well (part of Super Chinese 1+2 Advance), but I can't really recommend it. I felt it dumbed down the combat a bit too much and that it just allowed you to just punch everything to death.

I got your list, begun looking through it, I'll probably end up easing into shmups at some point (the only one I've beaten in 1942 on PSN), but I have question.

I've been looking up some of the games and genres, and one grabbed my interest, the Necromancer one. Is that not out in English in any form and has no translation? I read that it has an Apple store version, but I'd sooner just play in Japanese. That's probably the one I'm most interested in so far, aside from Double Dungeons and Bikkuriman World. I didn't know there were so many Wonder Boy games on PCE in some form.
High-tech low-life.
