I'm not actually sure precisely how rare Startropics II is, but being that it was one of the very last games ever released on the NES, I figure it would be a bit harder to find that usual.

Nice Death sprites!

I haven't updated my backloggery in a while.

Bleh, I'm a bit too poor to grab that controller for a while, I've only bought one home-console game at full price, this year (Bionic Commando). I've mostly been making budget purchases, so lots of games are getting pushed to the wayside... And I've always got a priority for games to come over accessories. Probably why I've never gotten into light-gun or music games quite as much as I've wanted to.

Also, have you ever stomped hard mode on Contra III? I notice you've only gotten it marked as "beaten."

Do you know where to buy one cheap? Lord knows I've abused turbo on a few TG16 games, heheh (my fingers get tired, dammit!). Heck, I've only been able to 1cc/no miss clear a few NES shmups thanks to the turbo on my NES Advantage.

Woah, holy crap. I had no idea something like that would work. O_o

Hmm... I've got a couple of wireless controllers with Turbo enabled, but their d-pads are largely made for making it easier to play fighting games... Which unfortunately makes everything else a bit MORE difficult to play (I didn't know this before buying them, as you may or may not know, I'm not that much bigger a fan of fighters than you are). They also suck batteries up pretty quickly and are a little cumbersome to hold.

I might get around to trying that out, though, their patterns are just ridiculous. It's got to have something to do with knowing the right direction to run and knowing the right time to crouch (I suspect there may be times you run TOWARD the one shooting you to crouch underneath it), but I never have enough time to really test any strategy and just end up getting killed. I can always take one out before it gets to attack, but since the second one can make it all the way over to the other side of the of the screen, I almost always die once (or more than once).

Without looking it up, because I think wisdom shared from friends who game is a lot more rewarding in application than merely googling a guide, is there any real way to dodge all of the final boss's first form's tentacle-things in Contra III? I have been unable to clear the game on one life because of those jerks.

Hm, I haven't played too many of them. I still haven't gotten into arcade emulation (I'm trying to only play games I own, so I appreciate what I have more and don't get desensitized). Growing up, there were very few arcades nearby and I'd rarely ever get money to play in them. I did play some Afterburner in the one in the mall and loved it, though, but that's been well over a decade since I've done that.

Didn't care for Super Thunder Blade, either (if you skim over my 360 backloggery for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection - "This game has aged even worse than Space Harrier 2." ). To say I have a problem with the "graphics" is a bit difficult to define. The artistic direction and quality of the sprites are fine, but getting used that scaling seriously gives me a (literal) headache.

It's been almost a year since I put that up, and I was rushing a bit on the descriptions.

An interesting aside: I actually enjoyed the original arcade Space Harrier a bit (I have a comment up for it in the 360 section under the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection bit).

There's something about the fake depth they use with the sprite-scaling that makes it nearly unplayable to me. I definitely don't expect other people who enjoy the series to feel as though I think they shouldn't, though, it's mostly a personal problem... I just can't tell what's going on, and I've tried so many times to be able to.

A: Brushed Rez to the wayside, I see? Let me know if you pick it back up.

B: A good chunk of the games you've put in for some anthologies (mostly the Atari ones) are labeled as "Unfinished." Those that can't be beaten (unless you count setting a high score as beating it) can actually be labeled as "Null," signifying that the game can't actually be finished. Your call, sire.

It was your site that got me interested in the Splatterhouse series in the first place... so yes, I'm definitely aware of it.

What are your thoughts on what we've seen of the new Splatterhouse thus far? The fact that there's been some trouble with the development house certainly doesn't help things.

I remember browsing through your Splatterhouse site out of curiosity for the series. Was good stuff, I must say.

Is that the "new" Rick I spy in your avatar there? Always nice to see another Splatterhouse fan.

How'd you get nearly 500 games? Didn't you have to take a hit to your collection a few years back? Or....did you have 1, 000 games at the time then, man?! O__o

If no one claims that non-extortionate copy by sometime Friday, I think I'll spring for it. I don't mind paying a few extra dollars for a sure thing. Also, I saw the listing for the $300 one was removed. Something tells me I'm not the only one who thought it was unfair. Yay justice.

I see you're having trouble with the third boss of Rez, eh? I honestly had more trouble with Mars than Venus when I first played the game, I think so anyway. It's been a while, but they're about equivalent in difficulty. But dude, the fourth boss is a PAIN. Don't tell me that's not the case when you get there.

I got the feeling the latter games were inferior. I would have personally tolerated it if either the difficulty had been toned down or if you were given unlimited continues. As it was, they just kept piling on the frustration.

Now for an unrelated tangent: If I were to find a copy of Gradius: The Interstellar Assault for $20, should I pick it up ASAP? The game's apparently damn hard to find, and the only other one I've seen on eBay is an EEP (extortionate eBay price) of $300. I'm not kidding.

When trying W&W out for a test run, I ended up getting involved in trying to beat the game, but it fatally glitched on the penultimate stage. A few hours later, I decided to try again, and I whomped that jerk Malkil with extreme prejudice. A VERY fun game overall. DON'T think I'm going to touch the sequels, though. What do you have to say about them?

And it took me... I think about TWO WEEKS to beat FF2? A lot and a lot of that was a whole bunch of goddamned grinding. Not fun, not cool, not kosher. Anyway, I wouldn't expect you to get on any FF games if they'll take that long, even if they're actually good games, which FF2 is not. Dear god, I am insane.

Oh wait, I remember you saying you got to play IV a while ago. I recommend picking that up again if and when you have some free time... though that'd have to be a LOT of free time, all things considered.

Though, there are many different releases of the game, and they all have their positives and faults. I intend to play through a translated rom of the Japanese SNES version meself.
