I'm sure I forgot to add something, but my collection should be pretty up to date. But yeah, it was tedious to add everything.

It was actually only my second or third convention. I'm glad I went, though. Especially because I got to impart my wisdom to the next generation! I hope you get to go to a fun convention someday.

Yeah, it's not unlike Valve. It's great to see SEGA recognize their fans' talents. They also acknowledged Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3, so Sonic's been getting a lot of love from me lately! (I'm so, so excited for Mania. I don't get excited for games often these days, so hopefully it lives up to or exceeds my expectations.)

And those budget cuts are disheartening, but I think your workaround will more than salvage Mario Teaches Dating. Wario is synonymous with sex appeal - more so than any other Nintendo character, at least. I mean, just look at this! [Link]

That sounds great! I was never an RA but I was a desk receptionist at one of the dorms, so I had at least a little familiarity with that world. Have you had to deal with any crazy incidents yet?

I love working for the journal!....most of the time. We're having some difficulties with the current guest-edited special issue at the moment, so that hasn't exactly been my favorite. But overall, I really enjoy working directly with the scholars whose work we publish and helping them to improve their writing. In that sense it's sort of a different form of my favorite thing about teaching, which is helping students to develop their ideas and their prose. So I don't miss teaching just yet, although we'll see if I do end up missing the classroom experience as time goes on. For now, though, I'm really loving not having to grade hundreds of papers per semester.

Yeah, nothing wrong with selling stuff you don't have a use for anymore. Over the last year I've been selling off my collection of hardcover graphic novels, and it's brought in a surprising amount of money and cleared up a lot of shelf space. I've gotten rid of a few video games along the way, too, and it's surprising how much some people will pay for this stuff. (Fifty bucks for my sealed copy of the Teen Titans GameCube games? Sure, buddy, it's all yours...) And it's funny you mention Pokemon, because Diamond/Pearl actually launched at the end of my second year of college as well...I remember blowing half my finals week playing Diamond. Those were the days, haha. Do you have your eyes on Sun or Moon?

As for books, let's see...probably my favorite thing I've read in the last few months is Lawrence Wright's 'Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.' It's honestly probably the best nonfiction book I've ever read...truly fascinating content, and just incredibly written. I've actually mostly been reading nonfiction lately, to be honest. Anthony Bourdain's 'Kitchen Confidential' was really fantastic as well; I had no idea he was such an outstanding writer. Anything good cross your bookshelf lately?

Hey, good to hear from you! How have you been? Is school still going well? I'm not teaching anymore since I'm working full-time at the journal now. I enjoy telling people who ask how my teaching's going that I'm "retired."

It looks like neither of us have done too much gaming lately...I've poked around with a few short games over the last six months, but nothing major other than Pokemon Shuffle (which I do still play every day). I play Spider-Man Unlimited on my phone sometimes too, if I need something to do while I'm listening to a podcast or audiobook. I also just bought Overwatch after giving it a try when they briefly made the whole game free last weekend, and it seems like a fun, low-stakes game that I can play regularly without investing too much time at once. I'm also considering starting Dragon Quest IV on DS either today or tomorrow, but I'm not sure how much time I actually have to devote to it at the moment. At this point I'm the busiest at school and work that I've ever been!

I haven't played any of the new Mario RPGs. I passed on Dream Team and Paper Jam, and I'll probably pass on Color Splash unless Sticker Star manages to win me over. But my first impressions of that game were so overwhelmingly negative that I haven't touched it since. I'll boringly trudge through it someday, I'm sure.

In conclusion, my door is always open to you.

P.S. How's the prototype for our Mario dating sim going? Nintendo of Antartica's janitor would like a functional beta by January or February.

It's great that you have a source of income, and I have faith in you to do well. College life can and will ramp up, man. If you ever need any fatherly advice, I'm here for you.

Remember, if you don't do well, you'll disappoint me. You don't want to disappoint your good friend MattThunder, do you?!

Little gaming on my end. I actually took a five month hiatus from here, too. Upon my return it took me a good hour to add everything new.

I guess the most exciting thing I've done recently was volunteer at a retro gaming convention. My bestie was one of its organizers, and I agreed to loan my awesome talents to his shindig. It was a lot of fun! It was also really interesting to see kids play old games, including the classic Sonic trilogy, Super Mario 64, and the eternal darling known as Superman 64. Some of them adapted fine, others thought they were too hard.

One kid in particular was mesmerized watching me play Mario 64. He kept handing me the controller because he wanted to save the Princess! I demonstrated some of Mario's more advanced moves and I ended up beating four missions for him (although I let him collect the key or Power Star at the end of three of them, so he could feel like he contributed). I also bonded with another kid's dad as I informed him of Sonic Mania. A few of my other friends were there too, so I got to hang out with them.

Back to Sonic Mania, I am so, so excited for it. I'll spare you all of the details as I know you're not a big Sonic guy, but while Mania may not have the original staff developing it, the two people helming it have an extremely thorough understanding of what made the classic Sonic games shine. This will be the most honest attempt at recapturing that magic yet.

I was pretty open with my dissatisfaction with Sonic 4. While I'm hesitant to call either Episode a bad game, neither of them built upon their predecessors. Classic Sonic in Generations was really fun, but even that was mostly a superficial resemblance to the classic games. I didn't believe SEGA would ever release a new game that genuinely replicated the Genesis trilogy and CD, and I was content with that! So imagine my surprise when Mania was unveiled.

It's the game I'm the most excited for right now. I hope (and expect it) to be a quality product, and I hope it's successful enough to become a brand unto itself.

I'm excited for Sun and Moon too, and college is great for Pokémon! And I need to utilize my Steam backlog too.

I haven't spent enough time with Sticker Star to offer any conclusive thoughts, but my first impressions were negative. I've hit the acceptance stage that we're not getting a proper Paper Mario RPG for the foreseeable future (and Trinen referring to Paper Mario as an "action adventure" series reaffirms that, I think), but I can't get excited for this one. From what I've seen of Sticker Star, I do believe the foundation is there for something good, but... I don't know.

Basically, I'm skeptical, but I'm kind of hopeful that Color Splash will be solid in its own right. I agree that it looks nice, so there's that, at least. For now we'll just have to continue hoping for a true Paper Mario 3.

I'm glad you're enjoying Fates. One of my friends loves it!

My gaming is going! I'm still progressing through things slowly... I picked up Awakening again too! My friend plans to go through all three versions of Fates, and I promised him that I'll beat Awakening before he beats Revelation. I also purchased my 1,000th game, so that's vaguely exciting.

I do like grinding, usually... If the combat is fun enough. As long as bullets are in good supply, I'm sure The Chrysler Building of Parasite Eve would be tolerable. Not that I'm in any hurry to do it. It's become a part of the long list of "to complete" titles.

Ah yes, I remember now. That sounds like a reason I would prefer the first Parasite Eve to the sequel, its combat was much fun. I wish it would have stayed like that... I don't remember the story, or how it connects to the first, at all. And I looked, Parasite Eve was roughly two years earlier than Vagrant Story!

I'll have to look into The 3rd Birthday more then. I looked into transferring from PS3 to Vita, I had no idea you could do that! That is so awesome. I now, finally, have Pandemonium and Silent Hill (which did work via wireless) playable on my Vita. It was very heartbreaking to see that it wasn't the solution to my Blood Omen problem, though. Makes me so sad... Thanks for letting me know that you can do that!

Haha, yeah. I'll say it a second time, that narrator in Bastion was great. I can still hear him talking and it's been months now! I do look forward to going back and completing that one, or at least playing more. I don't recall the narrator from Little Big Planet, probably one of the titles played with the volume muted. I didn't like that game as much, it became boring pretty quickly.

And same here, with The Walking Dead television series. It never really grabbed me. I'll watch it every once in a while, but I never really know what's what and who's who. Maybe it's too slow going? The game series on the other hand... We need Season Three!

The gut feeling is probably right about Persona then, best to steer away from. Anything a younger sibling would play with dating sim elements sounds horrific to me. It does seem that I am more into SMT titles for the combat. Strange Journey was fantastic. Enjoying SMT IV quite a bit too! The story took until nearly the end(?) to get interesting though. Devil Survivor will defintely be the next SMT title. I liked the hybrid strategy/traditional combat, but, again, not so much the story/characters.

Anyway...

Right now, I have a "gifted games I need to finish" going on my side bar. I want to at least finish those games first and foremost since they were gifts people had given me; and in same cases even shipped to me. I feel like the best way to appreciate that show of affection is to actually play the games, so that's why I'm trying to do that. Although I keep getting sidetracked with that as well. Looks like I might need to be strict with that as well! But after I finish with that, I might begin the recommendation list game. Good to have a reminder like that.
Don't know why you're wasting time, just know what I do with mine
