I mean, you can definitely still play it for the sake of completing the Infinity trilogy. That's the reason I didn't skip directly to Ever 17. Again, it has its merits, and if you're really into SoL stories, you will probably love it. I personally needed more substance and I'm very critical when it comes to sci-fi expositions and character depth.

Hey, sorry for the late response, I just came back from vacation.

To be honest, I really didn't like Never 7 that much. It has some ridiculously cheesy and cringe-worthy dialogue at times, especially in Haruka's route. The heavy SoL premise does not help matters. And the VN is a little too comfortable with certain character trope flanderization and becomes annoying after a while.

As for the sci-fi and emotional aspects, it does get interesting. The final route in particular is rather thought provoking, in the sense that you begin to question everything that has happened, so there's an existential component as well. Most of the sci-fi stuff has been seen in Uchi's later franchise, Zero Escape, but to Never 7's credit, it utilizes them in a unique way so you don't have to worry about it feeling the same.

Now, that being said, Never 7 requires huge leaps of logic and perhaps even worse, it relies too much on ambiguity. Essentially, without spoiling anything, there are various interpretations of the story, and whatever you think happened isn't necessarily incorrect. Much like ZTD, this is a case of the director being lazy and having the player write their story FOR them, only that the ambiguity is on a far larger scale in Never 7.

This has its moments, and it does have beautiful and well written scenes, mostly revolving around Izumi (BEST GIRL). Most of the VN is just underwhelmingly average for me.

Well there you go! I haven’t actually played any of the EO series, but I played a demo and it was nigh-identical, system-wise. Didn’t hate it, but too much dungeon crawling, not really my thing. It looks like Persona Q does something similar, between all the fanservice (and looks like you already own it anyway).

Don’t get me wrong, Strange Journey is still really good! I think it may have even been my first mainline SMT anyway. I just didn’t love the Etrian Odyssey-style dungeon crawling, and the battle system wasn’t my favorite either. And yeah, it can get pretty insanely difficult near the end, though I can’t say whether any of the additional content in Redux remedies that. It’s still solid either way though!

Yeah it kind of makes no sense lol - I honestly like the tone and probably the story as a whole more than the original so far, but some of the changes between branch points are a bit ridiculous.

How’s Strange Journey treating you? Probably my least favorite of the mainline SMT games I’ve played, but that’s partly because it seems so different, though that’s not an inherently bad thing.

Pretty much the same here - the concept of slice of life always sounds so boring, but there are a handful of cases where I end up actually enjoying them a fair amount! It helps that S;G has a great cast too, not to mention an always fun premise. Just hoping it can maintain that momentum as things get real!

Interesting that you liked Muv-Luv… from what I’ve read, a lot of people seem to despise the first part, or at the very least think it’s exceedingly bland, and only serves as a basis for which the rest of the series to stand on. I can’t speak for it myself, but I can only imagine how much you might enjoy the sequels, especially considering those same detractors commonly name Alternative as one of the best VNs ever.

I mean… while you could technically just watch/read about the alternate endings in NieR, it just feels more personal if you do things yourself, knowing what the second route reveals. To be fair, I did think Routes C and D were kind of a waste of time, since THOSE literally were Route B again with a slightly different ending. But Route B on its own was insane the first time through! Part of it was again me just liking the cast so much, I didn’t want it to end, haha.

BTW, don’t worry about missing anything in Automata - there’s a chapter/scene select option that opens up after finishing Route C or D for the first time, so you can finish up side quests and etc. Though you WILL want to make sure that Route E is the absolute last thing you do, for various reasons…

I’ve come to the realization that slice of life stuff seems to be my kinda thing when done properly - that’s part of the reason I’m sure that I enjoyed the first half of the S;G anime, whereas most people say it’s too slow. Comparatively, I felt the latter half was SUPER rushed just to give every girl (and Luka) their time in the spotlight, which I’m hoping the VN averts by having multiple routes and whatnot.

Duuude, come on! I mean it’s probably ruined now by all of your supplemental reading (and I will grant you that a lot of it is necessary), but skipping at least NieR’s Ending B is akin to not going through the true ending of a VN. There’s SO MANY extra scenes and new dialogue from a completely different perspective that completely changes everything. Like, I guarantee all of the average reviews at release did the same, because I was in the “good, not great” camp too until my second playthrough. No helping it now I suppose, but PLEASE don’t do the same with Automata - it does the “multiple playthrough” thing much better, and you will literally miss over half the game by stopping at Ending A this time.

Yeah, despite how well the anime adapted the overall story from what it seems, there definitely seems to have been some, for lack of a better term, divergence in regards to how Kurisu’s character was portrayed. Like, the show got the point across, but there’s much more under the surface when she gets more room to breathe, and like you noted, has the opportunity to interact more with the rest of the cast. Also, maybe I was just dumb while watching the anime, but all of the Suzuha foreshadowing is heavy handed af.

Hey, you “finished” NieR! Now play it again, haha. Trust me, you haven’t seen anything yet.

Haha, the first chapter of S;G; reminded me of Remember 11 in a good way, so I'm jumping in head first at this point! I liked but didn't love the S;G anime, mostly just because I never felt like the characters got much depth, so the stakes were never super high once things got rolling (I'm probably the only one who enjoyed the first half more than the second). But hopefully it seems that the VN will rectify those issues!

I took that as an intentional bait-and-switch. Many viewers (newcomers in particular) were probably expecting a Kurisu reveal, only to be left hanging and see virtual Maho in the next episode instead. Then we see the face of Amadeus we're all expecting when it's privately shown to Rintaro later on, right where the game's prologue ends. I did expect the first ep to end with that latter moment, so it's been paced slower than I expected. Which is good, considering brisk pace is the one thing I disliked about the first series.

P5A has been faithful so far. My gut reaction is that it's better than the P3 movies...but still not as great as P4 The Animation. Time will tell.

Aw yeah, OG NieR! Still gotta get around to that one.

Ohh I see… heh, I knew they had one out for SMT I, but I just played through that on iOS, should’ve guessed they went on to SMT II too.

Hmm, that’s interesting though - almost makes me wonder how much was improved for the GBA/iOS versions then, if the original of the second really does feel that dated. Good for completion’s sake though! SMT IV basically felt like a remake of I anyway, so I suppose it’s possible Apocalypse may be a better representation of II? At least from what I’ve seen, they seem to share a lot of plot points. Here’s hoping SMT V doesn’t end up TOO reliant on II then…

Hope you enjoy NieR! Much as I loved Automata, I still think the original has a better story and cast, if only slightly.

How you playing SMT II? Is there a fan-patch out? Or do you speak the Nippon-ese? I've heard it's the best in the series regardless, anyway.

The battle system was almost TOO simple in Berseria, I just don’t think there are enough buttons to accurately get the fluidity of combat they clearly want. Even something like FFXV would probably be better, comparatively simple as it was. Hopefully Abyss holds up though, it definitely has some of the better stories and character development in the series. Vesperia’s story is pretty shit, but the cast is probably the best in the series.

Ah yeah, that’s fair. I really enjoyed the world-building in Xillia, and thought it was one of the better stories, and I liked most of the cast too. I thought the combat was a nice balance of traditional Tales and what Graces tried to introduce, but I played as Jude, and I’ve heard a lot of people saying Milla can be kind of weird to manage, so that makes sense. Not saying you should bother playing through again, but I guess that could account for the discrepancy!

That’s about what I figured, haha. If the story was *that* good, I’m sure the anime would have done a lot better - a mediocre adaptation of a great story is still much preferable to one of an average story.

Ehhh, Berseria is far from the worst Tales by any means (hard to beat Destiny PS1 or Innocence DS), but it didn’t impress me either. Story, cast, battle system were all pretty solid, but I didn’t find myself anywhere near as invested as I did with Abyss or Vesperia. I can only assume that Zestiria left such a bad taste in everyone’s mouths (I know I didn’t even bother finishing) that anything even marginally better seemed like the second coming in comparison. I thought Xillia was pretty solid though, and looks like it wasn’t your favorite, so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt! :P

Looks like you’re being bombarded with questions about Chaos;Child, so I’ll just go read your thoughts about that elsewhere, haha. I still have to go through the Steins;Gate duology myself, ideally before the Zero anime, though that’s looking increasingly unlikely. How’s it compare overall though?

You aren't wrong. Dan Salvato's core idea was a deceptively cute VN hiding one unlikely character's disturbing resistance underneath, and in the good ending there's a personal appeal from him saying that he admires games in the same league that try to do something different. So the whole game was made around that concept (with no apparent ideas for a real conclusion or takeaway), and some actual decent writing just happened to marginally go into it. Good thing too; genuine concern for the characters' sometimes believable issues is the one thing that made it have such a heavy impact for me. I wish more horror games would utilize that! The survival category is exciting but usually doesn't do much to make me think on a deeper level.

I meant that it's potentially a good educational tool regarding certain mental instabilities. Dunno if it's made a huge difference in getting players to be more thoughtful about that kind of stuff, but hey, influencing anyone is worth noting. Now that you mention it though, I am glad it's seemingly popularizing VNs since they have some of the best stories in any interactive media.

How about ChaoS;Child now?

My relationship with DDLC has to be the most...diverse set of high-intensity emotions I've ever had over a game. I hated it last night after being underwhelmed by its message, not to mention worn out from the cognitive torture, and then getting no sleep from the paranoia made it all worse. But today, after thinking over how much I've learned about anxiety (and mental illnesses related to it), seeing the hilarious shitposts, and having time to play the more encouraging "good" ending, I couldn't feel more proud and entertained that I got to experience it.

Triggers aside, it could be a good thing this has gotten so popular. Except now I'm worried its following is going to end up like Undertale.
