Well since I played it more I will say defense in Granblue is heavily focused on using the spotdodge mechanic (and roll to a lesser extent). It's the answer to a lot of the stuff that is otherwise overwhelming, and you can do a dodge right out of run instead of having a delay. This helps a lot with how oppressive certain characters are in neutral and though they're all still strong the game is definitely better once you start using dodge.

There is some fucking awful option selects in the game right now but they're supposed to patch it out so I'd expect it to be more enjoyable on english release.

As a whole package it's probably a pretty good deal given that it has an RPG mode, but solely from a gameplay aspect I'm not super into it. When running you have a delay before you can start blocking and this game has some very strong zoning characters that only get better because of this. It ends up lacking the neutral play of something like Samurai Shodown but is pretty dry when it comes to combos/rushdown as well, literally everyone does autocombo to special at mid screen, you only get different combos in the corner or off an anti air. Just doesn't feel like it does anything unique or really excel in any one category. I'll keep playing a bit, maybe my opinion will change but I don't see myself sticking with this game very long.

Cold Steel's rote story beats are very frustrating and I feel like I've lost any connection or interest to its characters and plot. Feel like I'm playing Star Ocean games at this point.

Ah, yeah. I'm with you that it doesn't matter too much in the end. Some themes weren't apparent to me until the very end of the game, but it didn't bother me. Was still cool, retroactively realizing what the story has been saying. I'd much rather that than be beat over the head with it.

I thought the game was going to leave me with a lingering question or two, but it just kept going. There are a few parts of the end that were a little cheesy but nothing that ruins it for me ... honestly what major complaints do people even have?

It's really good, its basically only bosses (only 6 platforming levels) but they're all unique and it doesn't overstay its welcome. A lot of care was put into the whole game, definitely worth getting.
