Intro and Rationale ▼

Hello, everyone! I'm Kirbunny431. A very small few of you might recognize me from YouTube. Much like everyone else on this site, I use Backloggery to keep track of my game collection and see how many I have yet to beat or complete. Below are some notes on my own personal method for adding and classifying games. (These are for my benefit as much as yours, as I often can't remember my own rules.)

1. I only add games that I would display on a shelf. As a kid, I obtained a ton of shovelware for the GBA and GCN. I really don't want to clog my page with entries about dreadful licensed games that I'll never look at again, let alone play. That said, I'll still log some games that I don't actually intend to beat. For example, I'll log, "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" for the Wii U because it's a quality game, even if I think its campaign is dull and don't want to play it. However, I won't log "Shrek SuperSlam" for the GBA because it's a vile piece of garbage that never should've existed in the first place.

1.1. The above rule extends to Steam games as well. I'll log the big ones and my favorites, but I don't intend to log the dozens of forgettable indie games I received from free keys and Humble Bundles.

2. If I own the same game on multiple platforms, I will log it multiple times. These entries will share ratings and completion status. This will likely skew the numbers a bit in my favor (as I would only need to beat one game to check off three boxes in Backloggery), but it should balance out in the end.

3. When it comes to games with remakes, completion can flow backward but not forward. This means that if I beat a game, its remake will remain unbeaten. However, if I beat a remake, then I will consider the original beaten as well. Remakes often add additional content, so this system ensures that I experience every aspect of a game without needlessly replaying certain titles multiple times.

4. I will try to avoid the "Null" status whenever possible. Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of entries that don't contribute to my overall completion percentage. As a result, I will often devise completion goals that still require a fair amount of time and skill to complete. For example, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has no campaign. However, it has plenty of collectables and goals to pursue. I paid off my debt and upgraded my house, so I currently consider the game beaten. If I ever collect and upgrade everything, I'll consider the game completed. However, games like Garry's Mod and Team Fortress 2 are so open-ended that I can't provide them with any status besides "Null."
