Master of Unlocking: Majority of games are completed
I can't really call it an enjoyable overall experience, even if there are many much worse NES games out there. Some mechanics like the whole magic system, equipment system and two separate armies are actually quite cool, but there are just so many annoyances that drag it all down. Most notably the screwed up hit rates. You already miss a lot in the game in general and several levels have in-door segments where everybody is on in-door tiles. These give +20 Avoid, making it completely pointless because both parties are more inaccurate. Couple that with horrendous growth rates (30% is considered above average!!) and you end up with an aspect of the game that ruins its strategic elements because everything is so random. There are also some very badly designed maps on top of that.

Due to the low growth rates, promotions are where you get caught up to class base stats and most common classes have two promotions. I'm personally not a fan of this approach because it makes level-ups feel very underwhelming and robs your units of the chance to stand out with their growths. Experience gain also tends to be slower, so you have to grind a fair bit if you don't want to be at a disadvantage.

Overall it's not that good, but not terrible either. I hope it treats you better when you play it yourself! I feel damaged enough where I'm close to shedding a tear while playing Mystery of the Emblem because it's just a much, much better and smoother experience. No doubt I'll get through that much faster as I won't be dreading playing more of it like I did with Gaiden.

The soul was definitely already there. I was surprised myself how many things were established in it, which later titles refined and added to. Many common classes, the stats, growth rates, level-ups, promotions etc. were all there, even if some things worked differently back then. Most notably, there was no weapon triangle yet but slayer-weapons and bows dealing increased damage to flying units were already a thing. Magic also dealt fixed damage since there was no stat for it, so it wasn't as useful as it usually is because available spells just don't hit hard enough so a mage can 1-round an enemy with a double attack.

You mainly feel its age and system it was developed for when managing inventories and how limited the convoy is. Not having a combat preview with predicted damage, hit rates and crit rates sucked as well, but at least you could get a rough idea after a while. Buying weapons and distributing loot from chests was incredibly tedious and takes up way too many turns. There's no battle preparation screen whatsoever either, so you have to manage your 4 item slots on the fly.

It's one of the most ambitious NES games I've played, I'll say that much! I still had some fun playing it and it's totally worth checking out simply to see how things were at the start. Just make sure to consult a guide because there's plenty you can't see in-game, like the stats of the weapons.

Is your Japanese good enough that you can understand the dialogue in most games? I'd be stuck without translation patches to save the day. I've heard enough Japanese voice acting so I can recognize a good amount of words and lines but reading is just a completely different challenge.

I'll make sure to put some thoughts in my regular status updates on the FE games, so keep an eye on those!

I've only played an hour of Monster Hunter Stories so far and I can barely control my inner MH fan whenever I see a new little detail in it. It's too early to say much more on it, but it's pretty much a Pokรฉmon game within the Monster Hunter universe and as someone who loves both franchises it feels like something I never knew I wanted!

Sorry about not getting back to you about adding you to the Wii U. I've been bad about updating my Backloggery lol. I'd still be willing to add you, but if you had a Switch I could add you there instead. Again, sorry.
