Looks awesome, like a throwback to the old-skool. It....almost looks a little like a quaint game named Castlevania. What a coincidence.

Happy 30 Years, Super Mario Bros.

On this day, thirty years ago, September 13, 1985, Super Mario Bros. made its fabled launch in Japan and shook the landscape of interactive media forever.  It's hard to believe that I have such fond memories attached to a game even older ...

Lol Nightmare Creatures! I remember Nightmare Creatures. That is a game with a really cool atmosphere but I bet it hasn't aged well. (A phrase I'm not super keen on using) Interested to hear what you think.

Yeah man, I didn’t even know you were supposed to get bad endings until going through the trophy list. So I got to have fun with the post-game grind of getting all 50-something endings I was missing, ugh. For all of the effort it took, I really wish I had just watched the leftover stuff on Youtube or something.

Wow, I think you’re the only other person I’ve ever seen who’s read Banshee’s Last Cry! Yeah, while it’s by no means a masterpiece either, its simplicity was quite charming, helped by the stellar localization effort (not that the 428 translators didn’t do a fine job themselves). Although I never went further than just the one playthrough on that one…

Looks like you were even more underwhelmed by 428 than I was! I enjoyed it, but there were definitely a lot more flaws than I was expecting, considering its reputation. And having to go back through all the bad endings just to reach the last few routes? Not cool.

Indeed - the JP voice acting was really well done, and I’m sure the EN VA will be great as well, but either way it doesn’t really NEED it to be a compelling story. But it would be the only reason I revisit it, so I’m pulling for it. And I meant one hour per chapter as in like, every time that little overlay shows up lol - there are probably like 15 or so per episode, so the entire endeavor was a solid 50 hours or so at least!

Oh yeah, no problem! Apparently the Kickstarter is stuck in an eternal hiatus at the moment anyway though, so don’t get your hopes up about it releasing anytime soon though. But yeah, the voice acting so far is pretty solid! I’m more worried about how they’ll pull off some of the meta characters without coming off as too cringey (here’s looking at you, Chiester Squad).

I actually liked the voiced narration though! I’m not sure if the default narrator was supposed to be Beatrice or a third party though, since it wasn’t super clear who was narrating the first episode. But I can see it taking a while though - each chapter took me about an hour or so anyway, so this’ll definitely be something I opt for the podcast with, since I already have a clear picture of the characters and everything. Hopefully once the Kickstarter launches for real we’ll have a better idea of what’s to come.

Interestingly, since you were just mentioning how Umineko's translation needed work, they literally just announced that it's FINALLY about to get a re-localization and complete English dub! Though it may be too late for you now lol.

That's a really cool find! I wonder if it also has to do with IP over-protectiveness in the States versus Europe.

I want to travel to more places as well, but only for my own satisfaction and not for learning reasons. I just love seeing all the historic buildings. Well, I guess that is a learning reason. Just not a language-based one.

That's why I found a fellow gamer. I actually met him through backloggery. He's PaperLink64 if you're curious. Although even he was not impressed with how extensive my shrink-wrap collection was/is.

The slow descent into madness isn’t completely gone, though perhaps not to the murderous lengths of Higurashi. I don’t know if it was the writing (doubtful) or maybe the character designs, but despite enjoying much of the Higurashi cast and their interactions, I can’t say I ever became very attached to them like I did with Umineko’s cast, aside from maybe Rena and Shion. Ange is not great at the start, but she definitely grows on you, particularly when the circumstances of her childhood and current situation come to light later. (I don’t think I cared for her much till near the end).

Also, starting in the latter half, you’re pretty much compelled to approach the series like a detective and decide for yourself what really happened (in more ways than one). I still haven’t actually seen one of the endings for this reason. In fact, IIRC, in a case of reverse dramatic irony, Battler actually solves the mystery towards the end of Ep. 5 or so, and is subsequently MGS2-ed as your perspective shifts to several other characters trying to figure things out themselves. There are definite faults though - Ep. 6 leans SO heavily into the meta-verse that it begins to become tedious, though luckily that’s reigned in starting in the subsequent episode.

I'll give you that Umineko’s translation is a bit rough compared to how clean Higurashi has gotten at this point. I hear they re-worked most of Umineko’s with the Steam release, but I’m not sure if you’re doing that or not. Also, what settings do you have for audio/visuals? I highly recommend the PS3 patch if you’re not using it already, it makes things absolutely beautiful - the Steam version is alright, but not amazing from what I’ve seen. And while I’m usually not a huge fan of Japanese voices, the performances (again, especially from Battler and Beatrice’s VAs) are spectacular.

The question of what is real and what is fake (and from a meta perspective, if it really matters) is the driving question of the entire series, so there is MUCH more to come on that end. For whatever it’s worth, while I was enjoying the story by the time Beatrice had her little heel-fake turn. And besides… what makes you so sure Beatrice exists?

Congrats on that! I was showing my hubby your collection on here. I was trying to convince him you live up to your name and he was really impressed!

Also congrats on finishing your BA and starting your Masters and having such a cool opportunity to use both languages in Milan. Italy is such a gorgeous county. I am a little jealous. The time difference is going to take some getting used to, I imagine?

To each his own - I’ve heard of people who loved Umineko and hated Higurashi, vice versa, and everywhere in between. Umineko definitely leans a LOT more heavily into the meta-commentary, especially in the Answer arcs, which I thought made it a very interesting deconstruction of the genre as well as a fantastic story in its own right.

For fairness sake, I did think that the latter half of Umineko was better than the former, with episodes 5 and 7 being the main highlights, but it’s definitely variable by episode - episode 6 being IMO the weakest of the lot. Part of it may have been my own fault too - I read Umineko very gradually and gave it more time to absorb, and took breaks in between episodes, so it took me almost a full year to get through the entire thing. Conversely, I binged through Higurashi in matter of a few months, so I was pretty tired of it by the end.

I personally thought Umineko had much better characterization though, whether through traditional character development (again, more prominently the further you go), or through the various flashbacks/flash-sidewayses that flesh out their backgrounds. It was nice having a rather consistent protagonist in Battler and later, Beatrice and Ange who actually had time to grow as a character between arcs, instead of having everything reset (almost) every chapter.

Not sure where you got the strong mystery vibe from Higurashi, if anything it came off to me as a straight horror/thriller that had some mystery vibes to it in the background (except maybe that one arc with the reporter or whatever?). Maybe it was because I wasn’t as attached to the characters, but I never really cared WHY all of the weird stuff was happening, so much as WHAT would happen next and/or how they would stop further bloody shenanigans.

Also, better music in Higurashi? Come on, son. [Link] (potential Ep4 final battle spoilers)
