I've been collecting video games since 2009. To be honest, I have no intention on clearing my backlog. I just like to have this to keep track of everything.
My favorite kinds of games are casual Wii and DS era games! Rhythm Heaven is one of my favorites!
My Backlog Rules:
Redundant Games:
Redundant games will share their status. I have Super Mario Bros. on NES, as part of the Wii Super Mario All-Stars, 3DS Virtual Console, and the Super Mario Game & Watch. I beat it on the 3DS Virtual Console. All versions are beat.
Re-releases on modern consoles, HD remasters, and ports also fall in this category. Although, major reboots/reimaginings (think the new FFVII games) don't count.
Emulation, Digital Game Ownership, ROM Hacks and Dead Store-Fronts:
I try and play every game on original hardware. I will occasionally play rereleases on modern consoles instead if the QoL features are compelling.
I am not afraid to download games from dead digital storefronts. Preservation is important. I have no moral objection. I have a compete ROM set of WiiWare, DSiWare, the 3DS eShop, and PSP PSN titles. I don't count each of these in my backlog for simplicity. If I decide to play a game, I will add it to the backlog then.
Consoles are aging and I can only keep things working as best I can. Basically all of my disc drive consoles are broken and have either an ODE or are modded to boot ISOs from a hard drive. I still am a collector and try to prioritize the games on the shelf. I have full ROM sets of pre-Xbox 360/PS3 games. If I decide I want to seriously play a game, I will buy it for the shelf before seriously playing it and adding it to the backlog. Exceptions for games that are unavailable for modern purchasing and that have obscene prices (Looking at you, Jack Bros. on the Virtual Boy)
ROM hacks that are unique game experiences will get a backlog entry if I decide that I want to play it seriously. Think the really well-done Pokémon ROM Hacks. However, if it is a QoL or "easy mode" hack for brutal retro games, I'll just make a note in the progress section.
