I think we actually do have Diablo 2 in the Diablo Battle Chest somewhere around here, but I watched my lady play it, and it's just not for me. I liked the first Diablo okay when it first came out, but from what I saw, 2 is really unbalanced if you're playing by yourself, which is exactly what I'd be doing. I'll stick with Sacred, which reminds me that I haven't played Sacred 2 or 3 yet.

I don't always, but some of the software I'm using is outdated, so I don't know how much of an option that even is. I'm not super fussy about that particular thing, though, so I'm usually fine with "good enough". Of course, some of the software is also so old that it can't run in fullscreen with Windows 10, so I get that integer scale, anyway.

I've always found it fascinating, because I've never seen another game do that before or since. It's actually better, if you ask me, because half of what slows you down in RPGs is your walking speed, but the other half is NPCs that JUST WILL NOT GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY, and this addresses both. Oooo, a toggle; only time I've ever seen that is with KEGA Fusion, which still takes me a bit to get used to. That's... huh. Yeah, that would definitely work, but I don't think I would've thought to do something like that.

It really was; we were all laughing, myself included once the shock wore off. I'd never seen this girl pick up a controller before, and try as I might, any fight against her was HOPELESS. That kid's impressive, and the looks on some of their faces when he just TRASHED them were priceless. I like that, too: just a kid having some fun and buying drinks and snacks with his prize money; Krishna would be proud.

Karate Champ was my first, but Street Fighter 2 was the first that I got into for the fighting, and not just the pretty backgrounds. I followed that up to Super Street Fighter 2, where it started getting more complicated, and by 3, everything was just crazy. Darkstalkers just felt like a more natural evolution of Street Fighter, and has a fantastic cast with all sorts of wacky bullshit; no Fighter ever felt more right to me than that, and Jedah's Damnation was like the ultimate version of that with every character and that cool character creator mode. Just the same, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was like the ultimate iteration of all of the Marvel titles that Capcom had put out, because it had EVERYONE, even if it didn't have those cool Infinity Stones that were a pain in the ass to get and keep; no need to hunt down a ton of different games when I had that one in front of me. And 2 out of 3 means that I have to try Sailor Moon S, now, which is good, because I've been looking for a good Sailor Moon Fighter.

That still seems like bass ackward design to me - like didn't you have any better way coding special moves? - but makes a bit more sense; is that how you're supposed to Shoryuken, too? I can do it most of the time; it just always felt weird to me to stop on a diagonal. Ironically, some of that is easier to do on a keyboard; I got the hang of throwing Kamehamehas and Masenkos in the Super Butoden games, and it felt pretty natural once I did. I've decided that I'm not really interested in Street Fighter 3 - I've always wondered what it was like and what kinds of characters it had, and now I know - but I think I remember those being in 4, which does interest me, so I might give that another go at some point.

That certainly could be the case; I know it's been a thing since the NES days, but they weren't quite so aggressive about it as they are now. I'm wondering if there's going to be a firmware update for the switch that gives you that Netflix "Are you still watching?" Maybe they'll even lock you out and implement pedometers or something to make sure you're getting exercise. Mario is watching...

Chicago! My lady and I used to go there once a year and get into all kinds of trouble; it was a blast! We used to travel by train, too, which was a lovely experience that I'd highly recommend, depending where you live. But yes, that is the patch we were discussing; it's making me wonder if I should be backing up all of my DS games via emulation, but then I think about games like Trace Memory that'd be borderline impossible to play.

It also ocurred to me that following the linguistic conventions, it would be Cumbia Wumbia, and that's more of a sex joke. I think my place is in the kitchen with my Rock Wok.

Even in Action games; there's that cutscene in Devil May Cry 3 where Vergil slices Dante's bullets in half, lines them up, and golf swings them right back at his head. To paraphrase Droopy Dog, "In a cartoon video game, you can do anything."

Well, I've got a lovely little cocktail, so that's a thing that exerts a level of control over my life. It could also be what I call the nostalgia fallacy. Nostalgia is the act of following old memories to old activities in an attempt to feel the way you did when you first experienced it, but that feeling was one of excitement at the fresh new experience you were having; it's like running into your garage to go admire a car you sold several years ago. From what I've observed, a lot of that is subconscious, so you don't always know that going into it, and then come out thinking, "Wait, why did I do that?" I sometimes experience a similar thing when doing an old thing to try to bring back lost memories, though due to the nature of my reasoning, mine manifests more like frustration.

That's true; those are pretty far back, and most of the people who know them were RPG fans back in the day that wanted something to play on the go, since options were pretty limited for the Game Boy for a while. Now you've really got my mind going as to what they're going to bring out. That and whether it's EVERYTHING or just what they developed; I don't know if they still own the rights to things they only published. It'd be neat to see things like the Chocobo's Dungeon games get a release, now that everyone's into Roguelikes... or at least the indie scene seems to think so. I'm also half-wondering if they're looking to start making new entries in an old franchise, and they're throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.

Man Moody, Rockin' Kats is really... well, rockin'. Methinks it's time for SEGA to consider bringing somma Atlus' NES catalog to the Switch. If not in some sorta collection which would include translated versions of DDS 1 and 2 then maybe just on NES Online? I'm talkin' Bio Senshi Dan, Rockin' Kats, Xexyz... hmm, were there others that aren't based on licenses? Anyway yeah, Rockin' Kats needs to be played by more people. I googled it and a blog post came up that was like "you probably never played..." I'm with Raritycatchme about condescending headlines and video titles that are like "You probably never played this game! That probably includes you, someone who actually has." Aye yi yi.

For sure; I'm always for translating things that the west never got over updated ports of things we have, that's why I was happy that replicant got the re-make/master over Gestalt even though I do prefer papa Nier. In AAI2's case a double pack with AAI1 just works better imo because it does rely on a lot on that games events.

AND I GOT IT ALL RUNNING! Now, I had a lot more mapped to the now-disconnected drive than I'd thought, so my start menu, music, and who knows what else are a bit spotty, but I can fix that; all I need is time. The first time I tried to boot, the thing just SHUT OFF, but the second time, it added a third slot to my boot sequence, and that worked, so I think it fixed itself? I don't know, but thanks all the same; I ripped my space apart, put it back together, and now, it's much better!

I completely agree; 4K should be your thing IF you designed your creations around 4K. I saw a video the other day about upscaling old 24fps animations to 60fps and how bad it looks, because it just wasn't built for that. But yes, if only graphical fidelity mattered, we also wouldn't have abstract art, and that would be profoundly saddening.

Yes, but I think a lot of JRPG/anime character designs look the same, regardless of the artist; Kaneko at least looks distinct enough that you can tell who drew it.

I might have to check into that, if I ever get my hands on a Switch. Oh, that's cool! The only game I can think of that did that was Earthbound Zero (no, we are NOT calling it Beginnings), but I'd assumed that that was just a lazy way to implement a dash function.

Eventually, it happened the other way around; my parents' friends had a little girl who was... 8, maybe when Melee came out. She asked me to play with her, so I figured I'd sit down with her for a while... AND SHE MOPPED THE FUCKING FLOOR WITH ME. I couldn't believe it; girl was a damn Smash prodigy, and I'd never seen her even pick up a controller before. Now, unless you've got someone in the competitive circuit, Smash can be a pretty good equalizer, because I've had people who rarely play beat me in matches before, but this little girl was untouchable... and of course, she thought it was the funniest damn thing; I completely made her day. The Arc System Works titles I've played were always too complicated for me to really get into; my all-time favorite is Darkstalkers 3 (no Fighter ever felt so right to me), but other than that, I tend to hover around the semi-casual-accessible titles, like the Marvel vs. Capcom games, and ones that I've just already played to death and back, like Street Fighter 2/Turbo. I actually just tried out Street Fighter 3...3 for the first time last night, and I could barely figure out the Super Arts, or whatever they're called. TWO quarter circles!? WHAT SORCERY IS THIS!?

She was still trying to play games, though! She'd pick up Battle of Olympus and walk to the right, never really jumping, and then dying when repeatedly bumping into those blue slug things. Then, she graduated to Mario, where she learned to jump, but never figured out that you can do things other than RUN FULL TILT TO THE RIGHT NONSTOP. Now, she embarrasses her husband at Ninja Gaiden and Contra; she really worked her way up.

That's crazy to even try to wrap my head around it, but brilliant. I can't really remember how the 3D in the Virtual Boy looked to me, when I played it in a store almost 30 years ago, but not only was it the Wario game, it was also really uncomfortable. It was so uncomfortable that my neck hurt before I could even play long enough to give myself a headache.

You know, I'm not really sure why I'd never considered that there might be a patch like that... That would be something good to look into; thanks!

With a better mattress under me and more sleep in me, yes, Samba Wamba is the clear choice. Cumbia to the Tomba? Maybe not. I think so, too; I remember being really excited to get that infinite clip at the end, only to never really use it. Those who live by the sword are often shot by those who don't... except in video games.

It very well could be; with OCD, it can be hard to tell what's comfort and what's an unexplained fixaton. Either way, it's become so ingrained in me that certain weather patterns or the like can remind me of it; memories of it have become twisted into what might potentially be able to be fashioned into a completely new game.

"The more classic titles that you might have played on NES, we are still working hard to make it so you can play those." WE ARE GETTING JJ TOBIDASE DAISAKUSEN PART 2 AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. I'm not sure if they're actually going back that far, but I think Tom Sawyer would be a pretty tough sell. I'd really be interested in seeing Live-A-Live now, but it would've been even more interesting about 10 years ago, when JRPGs were making more of a habit of bragging about their "amazing" plot twists; I've NEVER seen a game with the stones to pull what Live-A-Live did, and I've played quite a few.

[Link] A-hau-hau. Old people jokes aside, I'd highly recommend that; you'll be able to keep that sense of wonder going from Lagrange Point.

I had actually gotten that patch all setup and have had it for quite a while just sitting and waiting for me to get around to but was just waiting to finish playing catchup with the games but guess I'll wait now (curious whether the team will finish the second game now considering they just dropped a new chapter at the start of the month).

Good point, and considering AAI2's quality (imo the best game in the series) it's def something that deserves it. Maybe a double port with AAI1 for continuity.

Thanks for the heads up. Fortunately, I had no issues with my controller or the framerate-linked physics. The problems I'm facing are the motion blur (which can't be disabled) and the 40% GPU lock. I'd also appreciate an option to disable the slowdowns while shooting, but I've heard it's a feature.

I'm playing through Family Sharing, though, so I'm not in that much of a hurry. Let's see how it goes.

I should've thought of that! It's like that secondary CD drive I had around the turn of the century that just wasn't hooked up to the sound card, which was a super easy fix. Thanks! I'll have to try that out when I get a moment; I've been meaning to break down my whole setup and redo it, anyway.

I didn't think so; guess my grill analogy was accurate, after all. I've long thought that resolution and framerate are just the new bits; the last time I ever heard someone talking about how many bits a system had was the Dreamcast at 128 (whether or not that was actually true), so now, we need something else to sell hardware. Like yes, it's better, but it completely ignores style and artistic intent, and you've got diminishing returns with each upgrade.

I suck at art, and I knew I couldn't muster the subtlety of different-looking characters if they were all just human, so that was my solution. I always liked that about the first 3 SaGa games, but I just couldn't ever quite get into them. Maybe now that I have a bit more experience with weapon durability, I'll give them a try someday.

It'd be an interesting thing to find out, but that'd be hard, since even though I'm old, I'm not "alive and conscious of societal norms in the 1940s" old. I learned all sorts of weird World War II trivia 2 jobs ago, even though that was just packing pills for a long-term care pharmacy. That said, I'd always suspected that something with a name as on-the-nose as Beta Carotene was some kind of bullshit, especially with Bugs Bunny pointing to it. It's surprising that you'll still see that on multivitamin bottles, when we've already discovered that Lutein is what actually helps with eyesight. Heh, that's pretty sly; I never had much of anyone to play against back in the day, since my sister was only 6 when I started moving away from the Fighter genre.

I was noticing that, myself; I don't actually have depth perception in real-life, so it's a total crapshoot in video games, since even when the world is 3-dimensional, the display you're using to play it isn't. On the flip side, it's how I figured out how the 3DS's 3D actually works; no matter how I dial it in, all I see is 2 images, so I figured out that it's 2 screens inside the display.

I don't necessarily think I'd need or even want it for every game, but most Third-Person Shooters would be perfect for that kind of thing, because the controller sucks for aiming, and WASD usually sucks for the precise movement you need. I've often wondered what DS emulation is like and how well it works with Dawn of Sorrow and Trace Memory alike.

It is pretty great; I was hoping for Chunk o' Funk, but that's a completely different era. Time to Capture Pokeymanz would work, too, because that's the only time I ever used the gun in Devil Summoner, but it lacks the flair of a musical theme.

I can't even tell you how many times I've played through SaGa Frontier; if there's a hair shifted to a slightly different position on a character's head, I could probably tell you about it. It's not even one of my favorite games, but it is likely the one with which I am most obsessed; I even have The Essence of SaGa Frontier on my bookshelf, even though I can't read Japanese at all. Also, Asellus is about as close as a video game character has ever gotten to representing my life - Terra's a damn close second - so yeah. Freak out.

Oh, it's a thing? I hadn't heard anything about it, but I'm so out of touch with them that I can't even say much of anything about Final Fantasy 16... or like anything after 10. I used to love Final Fantasy, but after watching my lady play 10, I decided I was done; too much of this: [Link] But yeah, bringing back Romancing SaGa, of all things, was a big surprise, and I really want to see what's next. There's some buzz about Live-A-Live, too, which is my all-time favorite game on any system.

It's entirely possible; having played a lot of Final Fantasy 6 back in the day, it was a while before I figured out that an esper is just someone with what most would call psychic powers (ESPer). I'd always assumed that since they were involved with ZSNES (at least I think so) that it had more to do with Final Fantasy, but I could be very wrong. Esper Dream 2 is my favorite game on the NES, hands down; it's one of those Action-Adventure-RPG hybrid things, but the pieces fit together really well, and the incredible weapon variety just makes it that much better. Very imaginative worlds and good combat, too. The first one isn't bad, either, if you're alright with messing around with the Famicom Disk System.

Most likely, I'll start fresh before Saturday. I think that exploring other classes for the first time since like 2010 or so will be more fun than just annihilating everything in your path. It won't take me very long to get up to the Jail in Act 1 anyway, especially given I got to Act IV Nightmare in ~20 hours.
