I'm out of the loop on all of these shows; I just wait for the marketing to punch me in the face later. Devolver didn't even put out a show, as far as I'm aware; I usually watch theirs more for the show than the actual games.

That's not really even your fault; in the '80s, Reagan made it legal to market directly to children as part of a plan to stimulate the economy, and it worked great... short-term. Without getting into everything Reaganomics has done to fuck up our country, specific to this conversation, it conditioned anyone who was young in the '80s onward into being good little consumers who must BUY BUY BUY!!! If you don't buy the whole line of He-Man figures, Skeletor will win, and He-Man will DIE! You don't want that, do you!? OF COURSE NOT! QUICK GO BUY EVERYTHING! It's something entire generations have to work hard to break, and I'll confirm firsthand AND secondhand that conditioning runs pretty deep.

Shining Soul 2 is one of my favorite games on the GBA; Shining Soul 1 is a game I played until about the third area and stopped. The first game starts out alright, but by the second stage, enemies are spongier than the cleaning aisle in your local supermarket. The second game rebalanced everything, doubled the number of playable classes, and made magic regenerate fairly quickly; I'd recommend playing that and skipping the first. Also, there are secret areas all over 2, and many of them are the stages from 1, anyway. I played through 2 with all 8 classes, and only the basic fighter is kinda boring; the rest are a hell of a lot of fun.

For her, it's been largely stuff before she was born, because she was born almost exactly as the SNES was coming out, if I've got my system launch dates right. When she was in college, she was SUPER into Ghostbusters, too, among a ton of other '80s stuff, even though she was born in 1990.

Blind spot is a great way of putting it, and I'm the same; I didn't withdraw from gaming, but I did retreat into a Nintendo bubble at that time. I withdrew right around the time the PS2 came out, but I also had a lot going on in my life, which left me with a lot less time for games. I'd also say that you didn't miss out too much, because now, all that stuff is getting remastered or remade or whatever term they're using this week, so you can still pick them up; I got Darksiders 1-3 with all the extras for $30 a few years back.

I think they were all REALLY trying to turn video games into something that we respected as a legitimate artistic medium, but just didn't know how to do that, so they put on their fanciest hats, dusted of their... whatever the plural of thesaurus is, and tried to make everything "deep". Problem is that's when writers like Ken Levine and David Caige came in... or else, everyone was a "gritty antihero", because antiheroes are more morally complex, you see, so WE MUST ONLY HAVE ANTIHEROES EVER. There was a children's book about some animal or another who was jealous of all the other animals, so it wished for this one's legs, that one's dorsal fin, the nightingale's voice, etc. and at the end, it was just some weird abomination, because none of those things went together; writing in the 7th Generation was kinda like that, and the modern art critics of the time just snapped it up. "Ah, yes, but you see, the assonance in Samus Aran's name is AAAAAA, which is reminiscent of a baby's cry, hence the distress signal and bottle ship. It's sybolism! A plebian like you wouldn't understand. M'yes. " And you know they'd pronounce plebian with a short e, because they don't even know what the word means, because people STILL do that. But yes, I support this hands-off design to story, because the older I get, the less patience I have for games that just DO NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP, especially when they have nothing to really say.

Doing something with a smartphone actually helping focus is something I don't think I've ever heard or seen before, but that does sound totally accurate. Of course, this is coming from someone still learning how to multitask with her tablet, and the 3 programs she uses for it: Alarm Clock/Timer, Pulsar (music app), and that thing that lets me get into the VPN for work. I lie, sometimes, I'll go absolutely crazy and use a FOURTH app: Camera! Point is, I'm at the point with my tablet that someone at an equivalent point with a PC would ask, "Why would you want to play a First-Person Shooter with a mouse and keyboard? I can't imagine it'd be easy to aim in 3D with a mouse."

Yeah, I'm lucky in that regard, too; my current team handles the biggest accounts to make sure they're happy, so we aren't as close-knit as my last 2 teams, because everyone's always so damn busy (also, I'm the "new kid" ), but it doesn't feel as heartless and soulless as the job I had where everyone chanted that, "We're like family here" mantra. They were family alright, but every one of them was that racist grandfather that shows up for Thanksgiving.

I'd just parkour with my walker. It's got a chrome finish and flames on the sides. I'd leap from the top of a skyscraper, and come down on them with the thing, trapping them in the middle, so I can flap the tray table on them until they lose consciousness. If I needed a projectile, I could mix my peanut butter cookies a bit too long; with that recipe, they get too oily, so if you bake them long enough to be fully cooked, they'll be ROCK hard; you'd definitely get a concussion. Don't FUCK with BatGran.

That is SUCH bullshit! Why the HELL did we get a Cocaine Bear movie, and not a Meth Gator movie!? Better yet: Cocaine Bear vs. Meth Gator! But yeah, fuck Ron Desantis and everything he stands for.

I often wonder what they're up to, because they're well-remembered for eating up development studios, but then also digesting them, and everyone hates them, but they've been too quiet lately. Ubisoft is abusing their workers; Activision-Blizzard heard that and said, "Hold my beer," Bandai-Namco is holding their actual games hostage with Denuvo; Nintendo is the Disney of video games, sending their flying murder bots to burn your house down, if you so much as draw a picture of Mario; but what has EA done lately?

I... actually haven't touched it since we last spoke. I was testing one game every day, and then just kinda fell out of it. I might pick it up tomorrow, since I'm off for a few days; sorta hit the ground running, you know? I'm also starting to wonder if it's because the games I downloaded have no .cue file, since all the ones I ripped myself did have that and run just fine. Don't know what I'd even do about that, but that's about where I'm at.

Stuff I want that will never happen is mega man x9 or a mega man zx advent continuation. I'd like the first 2 shin megami tensei games to cone out in america. I'm looking forward to the lollipop Chainsaw remake and ff7 rebirth. I really want an update on metroid prime 4 too. But honestly as long as a single thing interests me in one of these shows it'll be a success for me

The only for sure thing I can think of other than the RGG showcase in the Lollipop Chainsaw remake.

A DS or PS2 Castlevania collection would be cool. A new Banjo game would be cool, but unlikely. A US release for Cosmic Fantasy collection would be cool. Darksiders 4 would be cool. A Goemon collection or MNSG 64 remake would be cool, but unlikely. A Dante's Inferno 2 would be really cool, but highly unlikely.

As for RGG summit, Gaiden and 8 dates are givens, moreso Gaiden than 8, but probably 8 too. Kenzan remake would be cool, but I think it's too early to drop that. Dead Souls remake woud be cool. but highly unlikely. Judgment 3 would be cool and probably is the new game with the best chance. Fist of the North Star Xbox/PC would be cool, but I never really got a grasp of that game on PS4.

Mother 3.

PSYCHE!

I'm out of the loop in regards to what's current. I guess I can hope to see Soul Hackers 2 on Nintendo Switch? (Boy, not having Steam can be a disadvantage.) I guess some more diverse games for their online service would be great (but probably too much to ask for.) Pipe dream announcements? A new Grandia. A new traditional Shining Force. A new traditional Phantasy Star. You know what would be cool? If ya ain't gonna bring over and localize Shining Force III trilogy, why not demake it?

Anything in the shootie department? We still don't have the Toaplan or Aleste collections.

With so many Not-E3 presentations coming up this month, what are you guys excited for? Any games you want updates on, or any pipe dream announcements that would make your year?

For me, most of the big announcements I'm waiting on are Dragon Quest related. Some news for the 3 remake and new Monsters spinoff would be nice. Pipe dream announcements would be new games being localized that have very little chance of coming out here. If Live A Live can do it, then so can Tsukihime Remake, DQX Offline, Kanon, Air, etc

Well after beating Future redeemed and seeing how hard that game references X (and saga from what I hear I know very little about those games) I would be shocked if they don't port that and/or saga next. Don't even need to spoiler tag that one lmao we all know it's true. Oh yeah Xenoblade x really engrossed me especially with it's exploration and combat. Still of the opinion that game has some of the best open world exploration in any game and the best combat of the xeno series. You are correct on Devils third and the other might be a stretch but it's Star fox zero. That game is not good.

Yeah I mean thankfully I think the EO games while being a bit iffy on something that isn't the DS nothing is utterly crucial that it be on the DS. I still remember when 999 got ported and how that game just straight doesn't work story wise without it being on a DS.

It kinda sold me on why people are so dedicated to sonic and it's characters honestly. It's so charming and those characters are so neat. Oh neat! I haven't actually read Kanon before but it's been on the list. If it's anything like any of keys work it's probably going to destroy me however lmao

I think the most I spent on a game was $60 for a secondhand copy of the original Suikoden after its sequel's price BLEW UP, but I couldn't swear to it. I'm not that sure I've even seen a game I wanted for more than that, though, so I might've just been lucky. I'm so used to being broke that I still only buy most games when they're on sale, unless they're under $5 normally, and I do have a few weird indie titles on my wishlist like that.

Fortunately, it wasn't a purchase, though I probably would've looked more closely at the store page had it been; I won it at SteamGifts. It's called Next Up Hero, and it reminded me of Shining Soul 2... until I actually played it.

If you're playing on console, it's not a bad route, but you understand that it's no longer the only thing that keeps your games playable 20 years from now; not everyone does. And that seems wise, because it doesn't even make a good paperweight.

She'll play SNES now and again, but she plays NES games almost exclusively. It's baffling, because she was born just before the SNES launched, but she was the one of us to get into Atari, even though I was the only one who was around for it.

There are a lot of things to blame for Other M turning out the way that it did, but atop the pile (and atop Sakamoto's head), I'd place the 7th Generation as a whole; that was a very troubled time for games. We were super deep into the "brown is real" school of visual design, and the writing was just... bad. Most games came off like a college sophomore's rant paper - lookin' at you, BioShock - and the group I call the gaming academics just ate that shit up. Everything had to be "more" and "deeper", even if it was a fucking Mario game. I used to feel intimidated by them, even, because I wasn't seeing any of these things in the games I'd played, but I get it now. That sort of thing tends to shape what kinds of games get made, and it became this whole vicious circle, as the saying goes. Even at the time, I'd thought that to be the main cause of (badly) overdeveloping Samus's character, especially in a series that's always conveyed a LOT with minimal overt story; most Metroid games either tell everything non-verbally or they take the Final Fantasy 1 approach of making you look for it, and keeping it out of your way if you don't want it.

I'm not knocking it; I'm just in awe that anyone can function like that; I'm impressed! I get that, though; I imagine that'd be trickier on a phone. I'm an old lady, so when I needed a smart device for work, I got a tablet, and I'm not sure I even know how to open more than one browser window at a time, much less tab.

Neither did I! ...though this is probably the first I've heard of them. I was mostly interested when I heard it was less like Legend of Kage and more like Demon Sword, which might not be a great game, but has a lot of weird depth to it that I always enjoyed.

Well, that's true; Big Daddy Corpo's got pretty deep pockets. Of course, the way businesses are run now, employees get laid off after record-breaking sales, because you must make a sacrilegious amount of money; if Jesus doesn't come down and jump-kick you in the face, you're not making enough. That is to say that I'm sure they cut costs wherever they can, even when they don't have any real reason to.

The thing about a mobile phone is that when you're out (including being at work), it's always with you, and I don't need or even want people harassing me while I'm trying to work, so I always wanted a landline. We get more calls from those fucking robots than real people, anyway, so I guess it's like a dreamcatcher for phone calls.

Oh, no; this is a flip phone. The only cool thing it does is alert me when someone is using the Bat Signal. [Link]

I mean, I remember back when it used to be called MasterCharge, which sounds like something Mr. Burns would say. Still never had one, though. Huh. I almost never use my debit card; always credit, because if someone gets that information, it's a lot easier to get the money back that way. It sure came in handy when someone in Florida tried to take out a credit card under my account, presumably to buy enough meth to steal a police car, pull over an actual police officer with it, and then let him off with a warning. [Link] Anyway, yeah, hell of a shift; you'd get the same kind of looks you do when you tell a younger person that EA used to make great games.

I guess? I keep hearing people talk about software mode vs. hardware mode (usually for PS2), but I wasn't 100% sure how to actually do that. That gives me another idea how to fix my PS2 problem, though, so thanks for that! You really do kick ass at tech support!

Well I play since I was like 3 years old, and I pretty much start a new game after beating one since forever So yeah, I start a game, I beat it, then move to the next one, and so on! Neverending fun!
The key to beat many game, is to focus on one / two at time, you beat em, and only then start another one.

I'm pretty out of my depth on that one, since even with their own equipment, I don't know what things like the electricity costs would be on something like that; I've got my little DSL modem/WiFi router, and that's bundled in with my landline, which I have because I'm a fucking grandma and I never pay attention to my mobile phone. It's a flip phone, naturally; the one with the GIGANTIC buttons, because young people don't use them. Removing the logos definitely suggests something like that, though; that'd make the most sense to me.

Guess that makes sense why the other companies always used to dunk on them in all their commercials. Then again, it doesn't make sense that American Express would take that long to lower their rates if that's a legit advertising point in their competitors' favor. I wonder if that's what happened to MasterCard, too; they used to be the king, and Visa seems to have nudged them out of existence, since I never hear them mentioned anymore. I don't think I have a single card to my name that isn't Visa.

Well, that's good to hear; I'm glad it wasn't just clickbait bullshit, like what I understand Mr. Beast's content to be. Then again, the thumbnail wasn't just him screaming into a neon background, so I guess it tracks.

Oh, no, Live-A-Live is... well, I have no idea what anything costs, but what I'm saying is that even though that's my favorite game, it wouldn't be worth that price to me, if it were that much. That and Little Samson isn't any better than good; it certainly is good, but it's not some lost masterpiece that's anywhere near the asking price.

I absolutely won't get into something that's online only, unless it tricks me by not being up front about it, and as far as I know, that's only happened once. That's the exact reason I won't buy from Steam if a game is available elsewhere, like GOG, itch, or the occasional DRM-freebie from Humble, though Humble's been getting less and less of those lately. Lots of people are hardcore on the, "That's why I always buy physical," train, but online requirements make a physical copy as useless as my sense of smell. That would be pretty cool; I throw a lot of things at my younger sister's wall just to see what sticks, and she's even less a developer than I am. Unfortunately, most anything newer than the NES is a lost cause for her.

Exactly; the gameplay of Other M is pretty damn solid... aside from that damn softlock that I discovered. The plot just really sucked is all. No, I don't mean it was a bad B-list sci-fi movie; I mean it was a BAD B-list sci-fi movie. We used to rent those all the time, and we loved them; everything from Sabretooth to Deep Shock. I'm hoping that Velocipastor comes to streaming at some point. [Link] I'm saying Other M's plot sucks even by that metric, because it can't even be bothered to conclude its first main plotline. Also, it comes off as though it's written by someone who doesn't even know who Samus Aran is.

SINGLE TAB! That's worth a spit take, and I'm not even drinking right now! I can't even function with just a single monitor anymore.

I've finally gotten the chance to try out MelonDS, and the graphical issues I'd been having with Legend of Kage 2 have completely disappeared... problem is that there's some really bad lag with it. I'm talking minute-and-a-half lag; don't know what that's all about. I was almost there; I just needed your tip downloading from NUS. It's still too slow to even start the game, but that's another issue, I guess.

Man I even missed the smash hype as I had a 3ds and just resigned myself to playing it on that instead of buying a whole new console (plus no money high schooler). I only bought mine later because I wanted to play Xenoblade X and they were dirt cheap at the time. I remember mathing out whether it was worth it and counting every single exclusive I cared about which came out to 6 games lol, 2 of which were just hd ports, 2 were kusoge, Xenoblade and Fatal frame 5 which ended up getting ported anyways.

Yeah they were really smashing out bangers in the 3ds era it was kinda crazy how much good they were pumping out. If Etrian odyssey can get an hd port I game I was convinced was gonna be locked to the ds series for life anything can fingers crossed.

Things are going well thanks for asking, don't worry about it people get busy not the least of all me. Haven't really been reading much recently but I did take a cursory look at that April fools sonic the hedgehog VN which seems really good to my surprise.

Confirmed: [Link] I don't think I knew that at the time, though; it looked like one of those neat retro 8-bit-looking games hot off the heels of whichever game started that trend (Mega Man 9, probably), but before they were JUST EVERYWHERE. At first, they were such a breath of fresh air, going back to the basics in an era that had a LOT of problems with game design, and then they just started popping up like Starbucks in a strip mall.

Still trying to figure that out, too; I got just about every DS game I care to - most of which are just backups of games I own - running on DeSamuME (I think it's called?), but found out at the last minute that DSi games don't run on it. So, I heard Citra can do it. Citra can't; it's a 3DS emulator with - as far as I can tell - no DSi support. I'm on MelonDS now, but I haven't even decompressed the thing yet, so no idea how/if that will work. If I get too many false positives with these fruit-themed emulators, I might have to resort to one called Daikon&Steak or something.

Oh, is that it? I was thinking server costs, and for whatever reason, I wasn't thinking about the credit card license fees. Now that I think about it, that's probably also why so many places DON'T TAKE AMERICAN EXPRESS. But yeah, if they can still buy the cards with points on them, that shouldn't be so much of a problem. I've only ever bought things from most stores like that by way of those cards, just so I don't have to give them my credit card information. Then again, they know that some guy on YouTube is going to drop more than 20 grand in a single shot to buy every single game when they announce that it's shutting down, and let's be real: that's probably 19 and a half more grand than they'd gotten in the last year at that point.

It's even kind of a stretch to call it piracy, really; from whom is anyone stealing? The developers got what they're going to get when the publisher paid them for it, the publishers got what they're going to get when the stores paid them for it, and the stores got what they're going to get when people already bought the games. Mom & Pop retro stores aren't going to take a hit, because the kinds of people who shop there are interested in playing on real hardware; they aren't going to emulate. The only people getting fucked over are scalpers, and fuck them; I wouldn't even say Live-A-Live and Anodyne 2, the two games currently battling for all-time favorite in my personal collection, are worth $200, much less Little Samson being worth $5000 or whatever ridiculous amount it's up to by now. Oh, and I can't wait for games like that to get cracked! I'm not even particularly interested in them, but taking that live service, "war on ownership" bullshit and throwing it right back in their face is going to be so satisfying. No more, "Oops, we just decided you don't get to play this game anymore. Soooooorrrryyyyyyyy."

I'll keep that in mind; I really enjoyed AM2R, but I'd also like to see Nintendo's take on it. The melee counter sounds kind of interesting, and not usually what I'd go for in a Metroid game, but I did like Other M. YEAH, I SAID IT! Granted, it was the absolute WORST fucking B-list sci-fi movie I've ever seen, but I thought it was a pretty good game. Aside from that bug that softlocks you several hours later, anyway.
