☆☆☆☆★ Man that first mission (and the other... uh... 2 on-rail shooter missions) is super fun but then the rest of the game are boring missions hastily made on top of needlessly huge multiplayer maps, where you're spending more time on-foot and on the Landmaster than flying around, and man, on-foot and the tank both suck an astonishing amount. It's such a bummer, because playing it, it feels like there's a version of this game that actually rules but the one we got just isn't it. Between 1 and 2.

☆☆★★★ Great video game pinball action by Jupiter, the developers of both Pokémon Pinball games! It's fun to be able to choose the robot to deploy and have the theme song from their series play, the table mechanics aren't super deep but they're just engaging enough, and the game looks and plays awesome.

☆☆★★★ A pretty different game to its sequel, Ankoku Densetsu, but has the same appeal: Deliberate action platformer that will punish you if you lose your calm and don't know what to do. Ankoku is a little more easily approachable, but Makyou feels great once you learn it, too. I feel very very similarly about both despite being pretty different (yet similar, broad strokes-wise) games: Between 3 and 4.

☆☆★★★ Between 3 and 4. Fun, deliberate action-platformer not unlike a Castlevania game! A bit Splatterhouse-y, even. There are some spots that can cause frustration but they honestly never bothered me? The game's so well-paced I don't really mind the bits where you can fall off platforms and lose a lot of time, or the maze at the end. Extremely solid!

☆☆★★★ I like the 90s faux-3D render look a lot. The game's like if Super Mario Odyssey had 3D World-like distinct levels instead of "boring roaming around". I don't like what the combo system does to the game where it's too breezy to not pay it any mind so you feel pushed to always combo. The movement mechanics are interesting and the levels are always trying to play with momentum, angles & vectors in interesting ways. I hate the fluffy sterile writing. The boss battles really suck. ☆☆★★★ Between 3 and 4. It's a fun action RPG in the vein of Zelda and Hydlide! The story is interesting and sets a very good tone to the game. I love the different companions. It has fun ideas on how to convert turn-based RPG mechanics into an action game. The constant menuing, the lack of immediate, fun feedback to your attacks, the sameyness to the dungeons and sometimes being stuck without keys to progress are all valid downsides but it's a great experience nonetheless.

☆☆★★★ Topdown walking shooter with a super cute Alice in Wonderland theme. By Namcot. ☆★★★★ It's pretty frustrating at first when you don't know what you're doing and you're still learning how to move around with your bionic arm, but the game does a really wonderful job at teaching you through fire, and by the time you finish the game you've gotten really good at thinking movement with your grapple arm and executing it cleanly. Play it again as soon as you finish it, you'll see how you'll BREEZE PAST areas that felt very problematic on your first time through. Between 3 and 4.

☆☆☆★★ A fun 2-player game and a very competent early Famicom game from Nintendo. The game's pace is dictated way too much by the random screen scrolling, and the random scrolling can just put you in really terrible situations that there isn't anything you can do about, but it's a fun 2-player romp where you don't take it -too- seriously. In classic Nintendo 2-player simul style, you can screw the other player over but not as bad as, say, Mario Bros., which I think is a good thing.

☆☆★★★ Reeeaaally tight between 3 and 4 stars. Might change it to 4. A welcoming and forgiving STG that's great for people who aren't too good at the genre yet while never feeling boring and riskless, and still keeping all the good fundamental traits of a good classic STG (powering up, recovery). Feels like a mishmash of modern and classic STG sensibilities in a really good way, very clever. Only problem is that it gets too easy too fast on a 2nd playthrough once you know what you're doing.

☆☆☆☆★ Boring as hell. Did you ever want to play a platformer in which its primary influences seem to be Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Heroes? Look no further. Every level feels the same and they get so fucking long.

☆☆★★★ My very first R&C game! Visually stunning, fun characters and world, and an especially fun arsenal of wild ideas and concepts. Writing can be a bit too fluffy on the main characters, but I love every time Zurkon Jr. speaks. Backtracking, finding some collectibles and some side-missions are annoying, combat is great fun but can be really hard to read once it gets more chaotic. Once you have a lot of weapons, the weapon-switching can halt the pace a bit too much. A fun time nevertheless!

☆☆☆★★ It controls surprisingly well, and it has some cool ideas and fun up its sleeve, but what really brings the game down are the boss battles, which at first are inoffensive (it's fun how there are secret ways to get extra hits in sometimes!) but then get extraordinarily bad as the game goes on. The highs are also not really very high at all.

☆★★★★ Between 3 and 4. Nevermind my Nemesis review - this game is great AND it's easy enough to be a great introductory Gradius title! Brings much needed variety, new fun bosses, and has this awesome stage-to-stage narrative/progression that I feel would make even the most jaded people get surprised and invested in. Recovery is mostly gentle and generous but can be pretty tricky on a couple bosses. You can coast by really easily unless you do Big mistakes

☆☆★★★ Between 3 & 4 - Normal Mode is a very faithful and competent port of a game that's "alright, I guess". Original Mode is fantastic but a bit short and easy, redesigns the game very smartly in a few key ways. "HELPER" rules and you can control it with a second player for an incredibly fun assymetrical co-op experience! Would have been an all-timer 2P Mega Drive game if HELPER was a more consistent part of the game. Cleared No Miss on Original Mode.

☆☆☆☆★ Between 2 and 1. Plays a lot more smoothly, is more technically competent, but the tilework has downgraded from "one of the best looking GB games" to incredibly boring and generic. It's a much smoother and eaiser game but it is also a much more duller game as a result. The constant grappling really hurts the game. There are some pretty creative and involved and fun boss battles this time around, though, whereas the prequel's bosses could feel pretty dull at times. The music is also really boring

☆☆★★★ A sequel to a bottom-of-the-barrel Famicom kusoge that still has copious amounts of slowdown, dizzyingly choppy scrolling and keeps most of the same ideas... And yet, it's great! It has really nice music and is one of the most incredible-looking Game Boy games, with surreal graphics that are at the same time hyper-detailed and yet completely non-specific and non-sensical, making it feel like a strange dream world on a post-apocalyptic Earth. It has a lot of incredibly interesting ideas.

☆☆☆★★ Between 2 and 3. I think this game is strongest when it's more linear and directed - when it feels like you keep going down into deeper & more ominous parts of the planet and killing Metroids one after another. The exploration isn't awful but it does get boring and the areas don't look too distinct from one another. I really like the audio. It's a pretty easy and spiceless game action-wise. What elevates this game really is that it is a fantastic tone piece. Endgame is really strong.

☆★★★★ Controls take some getting used to but works well once you do. Bosses can feel very punishing and unforgiving until you figure out what you have to do. The game is weirdly short, could've used a dungeon more or two, but that's a good problem to have - I'd rather have this than a game that drags. Wonderful setting, characters, looks amazing. Very funny and cute. Extremely charming town with extremely charming NPCs and sidequests. I even like the English voice acting!

☆☆☆★★ Between 3 and 2. It has a ton of variety and creativity but its light puzzle focus is dull and goes on for a bit too long. Final world is fun for being more straightforward and actiony and more like the DK arcade games - I would've liked more stages like that. It's the most Popeye these characters have ever been, Mario has a ton of cute silent cartoon animations, Donkey Kong is a fun brute. Makes me feel like this is the game that most bares out the truth of these characters.

☆★★★★ I usually hate colorization ROMhacks because they look fucking terrible - extremely boring color choices that don't respect the original art's contrast and make games look like shitty Master System games, and little to no adapting the original art when it needs to. They look like a toddler using a crayon over a Game Boy game. Not this one. Extremely fun color choices and new art with an eye to detail AND it fixes ALL of the slowdown issues of the original. ☆★★★★ One of the best Rockmans, with incredibly fun weapons, great narrative, & fun original bosses and enemies. It's got the slowdown problems that the Minakuchi RM games have, unfortunately, but they don't hinder the experience much. The stages do feel a bit samey despite how they feature different enemies and obstacles because they're paced and structured very similarly and they mostly look very similar. Bosses are really great but they could be a little sturdier or harder, they go by too quickly.

☆☆☆★★ Between 2 & 3. A simple platformer with interesting car-like movement. It requires a lot of commitment in order to not get hit, and because you only have a single hitpoint, it means dying a lot on the later levels until you learn what's coming up ahead and how to deal with it. However, there are always multiple answers to every obstacle, and there are plenty of opportunities to get extra lives, which can be fun to figure out. Every subsequent clear feels easier to do. Final world is FAR too mean

☆☆☆☆★ Has great graphics, has some fun ideas on having different kinds of cartoony Indiana Jones-esque adventures that create a fun narrative and levels that feel very different from one another, that on a fun game (like, say, Rocket Knight Adventures), would make it feel like a fantastic full-feeling adventure. But it just controls so badly, can be so mean, and has such terrible mechanics. I wanna say between 1 and 2 for its positive qualities & that it's not as torturous to play on a revisit

☆☆★★★ Levels are too long with repeated segments to them, and sometimes feature weird "wait for the level to spawn a platform or change" segments. Why are WILY letters here if not to fuck players who didn't collect'em? I hate Crystal Man's level. Other than those problems the levels are really fun. Some annoying slowdowns. ☆☆☆☆★ Between 1 and 2. Stages drag for too long and feel repetitive, the game has a ton of jumps that require you to do them at the very edge of the platform or you're dead. a ton of bad-feeling low-ceiling jumps also. sometimes they'll throw in an enemy out of nowhere just to throw you into a pit. anyway: annoyingly lethal in the least fun way. the unholy amounts of slowdown are also a big annoyance, especially if their inconsistency causes you to do mistakes.

☆☆★★★ It's good - between 3 and 2. A bit strict and mean at spots, but I think it manages to do a really solid game on such a small screen - the new enemies and level obstacles are really neat. But! It is a really good one of those! It never felt obnoxious, obscure or trite figuring out where to go next, the game jumps from different beats well. SFC version never feels very grindy, the pacing feels really smooth especially early on. It also looks really great.

☆☆☆☆★ Between 1 and 2. The screen space feels incredibly cramped, the levels are boring, made worse due to all the secrets in them that make you replay them several times over, no fun bosses, only a couple fun weapons, most aren't fun to use or feel too different from one another, exacerbated by the small screen space that makes their differences even smaller. I like it a little bit better than last time but my issues still stand: Levels are annoyingly long, they maybe would've been good levels if they were 25-30% shorter. Bosses will sometimes only have tiny opportunities to attack them. ☆★★★★ It's really amazing how this feels more "mascot platformer"-ish and yet it still feels like a Rockman game at heart. The weapon selection is incredible, it's an amazing looking & sounding game, it has a ton of really neat and fun ideas that breathe a lot of life into Rockman and lean into the toyetic qualities of all the weapons & tools you acquire through a RM game. ☆☆☆★★ Between 2 and 1. Not a good videogame, but what keeps it from being 1-star is just how much it believes in itself, it's a game with a big heart - the backstories for the characters reveal great willpower through loss and righteousness, the e-mails that the victims rescued write you are sweet. ☆☆☆★★ Between 1 and 2. "metroidvania" Kirby doesn't work because Kirby's abilities are fleeting power-ups and not permanent upgrades that will unlock new doors for you, so this game has no way of actually guiding you or cluing you where to go next, so the game just feels like regular Kirby stages except they're duller and more labyrinthian and you need to go through the same sections many times only to find long dead ends or insignificant rewards that do not help you progress. But it's an incredibly mean game, with some of the worst stages I've ever seen, especially when playing as Rockman, who takes too long to take out regular enemies and gets zero tools to make levels easier to manage. There are a lot of ideas in the game that are "fun in theory" but in practice are hugely frustrating & bad.
