Oh, I have been playing co-op. It's a tremendously fun game, especially when everyone is laughing and yelling at each other.

I see that you've play Silent Hill 2 on PC. Was it played on a modern PC? I heard it is difficult getting it to run properly on a Vista/ 7 machine. (found your page through the main page )

Yeah that's how I've always been, so that's why I ended up studying linguistics haha.

Rosetta Stone is possibly good for helping your speaking, but the bulk of you learning will probably come from work books and such. That's where a lot of the grammar and stuff comes from.

You can just wikipedia for the katakan chart. Make flashcards or something, it'll come in no time. For actually learning the language, I'd recommend either taking classes, or going to a University bookstore of some sort and getting intro to Japanese workbooks if you can.

I have a grasp of about 100 kanji and I know the grammar of the language. If I spend time with a dictionary I can get a lot of what is said, however, Kingdom Hearts for example is very linear, and is almost completely voice acted. I never had problems figuring out where to go. Other games wouldn't be so easy.

Also, with "work" it's mostly just working with general language syntax, phonology, stuff like that. I'm a linguistics major. I'm currently taking classes in Korean, but I previously had classes in German and Japanese. But I work with incredibly uncommon languages all the time to analyze how language works in general.

The ability to save anywhere from a game is like the only necessity of a portable game I could even play a full playthrough of FF7 like that ...which I've never actually done

I've yet to play RE5...Well I played the demo, and even for a rookie RE person like me, I thought it WAS pretty easy

True, the dungeon-crawling mechanic was quite teh suck D: I'm not a big fan of mindlessly or "mindlessly collecting hearts" (like the beginning of KH:DS)

lol, that whole "twittering" with the perspective of a character is quite a nice idea, props! 'ing a pokemon game is tiresome I've only done it once D:

Haha what you described is almost exactly how the majority of English fans are. "English dubs are soooo bad compared to the amazing voice acting done in the Japanese game!" "This translation is all off, it doesn't retain any of the meaning!" It's hyperbole, of course, but I think translators and localization teams don't get the credit they deserve. I work with 3+ languages every day and many people barely have a grasp of their native language... they don't realize many of the things about language that just can't be translated, but most of the time localization teams pull it off anyway (Persona 4 comes to mind, and Atlus localization in general. I also find The World Ends With You to be one of the best localizations EVER, but many diehard fans disagree)

The very few games I have played in German (DS Games come to mind, many of them have german even in the American release, such as Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2) have been translated quite well, although none of them had voice acting, so I guess I can't comment there.

I'll be playing Birth By Sleep soon which according to my brother is much harder to read than KH2. Honestly, you can just spend a little bit of time learning Japanese katakana, and you can read upwards of 90% of the important stuff in the game, especially since the cutscenes are voiced in English anyway. There's like 2 keyblades that aren't in katakana, and that's about it.

Now that I click on your profile I notice that you're from Germany. I assume that means you speak German? That's awesome. There are a lot of games (Kingdom Hearts included) that I'd love to play in German. Unfortunately, owning a US PS2 and NTSC/J PS2 is expensive enough as it is

I have a basic knowledge of Japanese. The important parts are in katakana which I have been able to read for years (it really takes only a couple weeks of learning, although it helps I have a bit of a language obsession) so it wasn't that bad. All abilities and magic and equipment stuff is in katakana (if you don't know, that basically means English written with Japanese characters.) Anything I needed clarification on I asked my brother, who is a huge KH fan (I've never played - I was only interested the supposed difficulty of the game.) The game is very linear so I didn't need to ask for help that often.

lol that skipping scenes is nothing but the TRUTH
especially in Paper Mario's final boss fight(gcn0....about 10 mins of text just to begin fighting the damn boss

...i guess that makes you a masochist? I kid, yeah, some games do tend to be absurdly easy nowadays, especially with all this OMFGWEWANTCASUALSINOUTSCONSOLESTOO movement there appears to be in the game market

I actually got used to CoM's battle system pretty quick...some other people hate it to death, but it wasn't THAT hard or anything. Yeah, I also got the same feeling of "WOAH, THAT'S FROM CHAINS OF MEMORIES" when I saw twilight town for the first time, and my brother was like HUH? (since he never really played CoM) so I had to explain to him what sora was doing asleep and stuff

are you casually replaying Pokemon Red? or are you actually planning on ing!?

yeah I lolwat'd too

not being able to skip cutscenes is one of my biggest gripes in videogames especially the long-ass ones like the intros from zelda

i'm not a big fan for "hard mode" settings in games, the urge for more FFFFFFFFFFF- moments in some games is kinda :lolwat: but it's still nice to replay a game you love and not do the exact same thing with no change whatsoever

did you play chain of memories for the GBA?...sure it might not be the same as the flashy ps2 graphics, but something is something

woah at getting spoilers from youtube there should be some type of spoilers tag in the site or something O_o... i'm not really bothered by spoilers though, sure it might kinda spoil a surprise at a certain point, but to me, it's better to actually SEE the cutscene and not be all like RAAAGE at a random spoiler you might come across...errr...yeah

Yeah, I get what you mean about co-op. It's just that every time an RPGish game with multiplayer comes along, I'm reminded of the amazing times I had playing FFCC and Four Swords on Gamecube with three friends and I wish I could re-create that feeling. It's too bad that I can't seem to find anyone that's interested these days.

I appreciate your comments!
'cause life's too short not to waste your time with gaming! Wait, what?
