Cheers! It has been a hot minute, hasn't it? That one fell out of queue briefly as I scrambled to finish Metroid and Wario Ware. I've been looking at it in my PS4 stack and wanting to get back into it though. lol

I've been thinking a lot about Monster Rancher lately. My girlfriend got me a copy of 4 on PS2 for this coming Holiday, and it's been fun watching her experience the gimmick for the first time. Feels a lot more polished and gameplay rich compared to the first ones, but I'm still pretty new to the series. I've been neck deep in Animal Crossing again and a lot of PSO on the side trying to catch up to my friend in Ultimate so we can LAN together (DC).

How about you? What's new? More game making? SMT5?

Right?! I love how tracks like Danketsu manage to fit the energetic and chaotic feeling of the series just perfectly

Can't forget Katamari Dancing, too. It's such a catchy theme song! [Link]

Actually, Shru... a lotta game companies these days seem more concerned about profit. Fair enough, they gotta feed themselves. The passion they had in that bygone era seem to be not there most of the time. Occasionally we do get homeruns like Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: BotW, but a lot of recent games from company seem rather... standard. Maybe even Metroid Dread, but somebody will prove me wrong.

While we were lucky to get Namco Archives (definitely a step in the right direction, yeah yeah, definitely a step), Namco doesn't seem interested in continuing Klonoa. Maybe someday. After all, we had begun to get more forgotten titles, and Namco putting their games on Arcade Archive will mean the potential of getting more lesser known or never before released in the US classics. Dragon Saber is what I want. Klonoa? One can only hope.

Addendum: Hey... Pac-Man Museum+, comes with a few more obscure games in the series, plus an interactive environment that you walk around in.

Klonoa is no doubt a neglected series. Sure, we may have gotten a remake on da Nintendo Revolution... been a while since the Wii was called that, but Klonoa hasn't been seen since. Almost as if Namco forgot all about it by this point.

Boog Fables huh? Are ya playin' on hard mode? I shouldn't try to play it on hard.

So, do you feel it replicates Paper Mario well? Does it bring its own idears to the table without straight up just rippin' it off? Does the insect theme get old after a while?

I like how they sound when they talk.

Yep, that's basically it. Last year is basically for making the best equipment so you have an easier time with the final boss and optional areas, but it's as you say it just takes a lot of time and since you don't really have anything better to do outside of alchemy, it's a LOT of time you spend just menuing. The worst part? You have to do it twice since you do need another playthrough with the other character to get the better ending (even though it's not really canon). I hate rorona for a lot of reasons, but I dislike eschatology because everything is so pointless. At least it's the last atelier game with time limits.

>This game is taking a long time because the time limit is making me obsessively optimize.

Uhhh why exactly? My playthrough of eschatology was incredibly boring because once I got a new assignment, I just went outside once, cleared all the new zones in one go, then it's just months of boring alchemy until the next assignment. Once you get all of them, you have a WHOLE year of absolutely nothing to do anything you missed or, more likely, spend the whole year menuing and doing alchemy. This game tries really hard to be rorona but the deadlines are not relevant at all

By the way I just kinda remembered but there is a demo that's basically the beginning of the game so you can try it if you want, the game itself is not that much different anyway.

Oh I bought it on release and it was pretty fun, I just stopped playing for no real reason really, I should get back to it. That being said, back then they were releasing patches every few days rebalancing the game based on user feedback and it was getting easier and easier, so I don't know the current status of the game.

As far as I remember, it's basically your typical mystery dungeon game, with combat from darkest dungeon. It kinda looks like Etrian Odyssey and the difficulty was rather high. The difficulty didn't come from exploring, mechanics or combat (although bosses were difficult), but rather several penalties you get from not doing things correctly, but I feel most of these were patched so it's probably not an issue anymore. The thing is that you had a clock telling you when doomsday was going to happen, and whether it sprang forward, stayed the same or even sprang backwards depends on your performance in the dungeon. So not exploring the map, getting people killed, not doing your quotas, having people in your party overlevelled and so on were penalties towards the clock, and once doomsday happens it's game over. When I started playing it was literally a fight against the clock, but I remember that the clock became less and less of an issue the more patches they made.

So yeah if that is right up your alley, the game itself was fun. My only real issue was honestly the bgm, it's just ambience music for the most part which is honestly a bit dull.

Did you know that startropics has broken music? There's this youtube video where they fix it and they even made a patch! It's pretty interesting if you didn't know about it [Link]

That really sucks, hope those restrictions will be removed sooner or later. They're cool games though. Kinda wish I had all 6, but I think I have a few gaps.

I feel tempted to say Dahlia Hawthorne is one of the best villains ever. When I think back to the whole Ace Attorney series and its villains, she's easily the most despicable one. And that's putting a young girl on top of robbers, loan sharks, masterminds, so on. When it comes to Dahlia, even the most disgusting criminals become pitiable.

Here's Adam Sessler talking about what makes a worthy remake. Honestly... it's really good hearing him talk about games again (though I don't think he ever really stopped...) I never played Tony Hawk, even back then, but I kinda wish I had the patience to play something different than what I'm used to. Oh well. Maybe when the Switch version is on sale some day.

It's not modded, but FreeMCBoot sounds pretty interesting as a solution! Would need to investigate more US/JP exclusives to make it worth it though, I think. PS2 is probably one of my least explored consoles.

Regarding La Mulana, I wasn't really trying to suggest Konami being involved, but instead that there's a lot of Konami-related MSX cameos present in the original game, so I think there would be copyright issues preventing them from being able to include it. I found a blog post about it, but can't guarantee if this qualifies as spoilers or not considering it is about cut/changed content, but might be interesting: [Link]

Sly Raccoon is a game I've wanted to play since I was younger, but never really had the opportunity to, at least not beyond a demo version and very briefly checking out the PS3 remakes(?) at one point many years ago. I like it a lot so far, binoculars in games are always a huge plus!

I haven't forgotten about Lifeline, but I don't own it so playing it on hardware could prove difficult, especially seeing how much it seems to be going for nowadays. Or maybe I'm just looking at the wrong vendors but I wasn't really expecting it to be that expensive @_@ The capture card I bought is an older model that has composite/component plugs, so I can record all my consoles now which is pretty exciting, but ironically I've not really had much of an opportunity to test it yet these past weeks. It's certainly neat to mess around with though.

Looking at your backloggery, I hope you're enjoying La Mulana, although I am very much aesthetically partial to the MSX style original's visuals, it's a real shame Konami seems to be a bit too stingy for the devs to let that version receive an inclusion in the switch release, I think? I never actually finished that game but I always thought it was really cool.

edit: just realized lifeline is US/JP only? Looks like I'm kinda screwed as to playing it on actual hardware

Ah hadda chance to get the La-Mulana 1 and 2 pack, but the pandemic started and the game store never got the copy I preordered. Sucks... though at least I got Psikyo Shootin' Stars Alpha and Psikyo Shootin' Stars Bravo.

La-Shruana, I've been playing La-Mulana on and off. It reminds me of Legacy of the Wizard. Ya I know it's based on MSX adventure games which I guess Legacy of the Wizard was. It's been said to be quite obtuse, just like games from the 8-bit days. Anyway, ya got any power tips for the game? I'm only barely into the first part of the ruins, getting struck by lightning because the room wants me to be pacifist and stuff.

Fragile Dreams is pretty cool. I haven't beaten it yet, only played through half the game, so I can't say whether it manages to stand out from beginning to end or not. But just like other Wii XSEED games, it's very charming and worth trying out.
