I felt the ending was a tiny bit lackluster somehow. But honestly this was a really great experience overall.

Always a struggle when you get into a game, realize it's too easy, but it doesn't have in-game difficulty-changing options, so you're left with the choices of: 1. Start over, or 2. Keep playing since you don't wanna lose all your progress and time.

I wouldn't do that, Hugo has the most unique moveset in the whole saga and makes you approach the game with a completely different mindset, which also means that it's very hit or miss. I liked it, but I know most people didn't. Toal is also the canon ending and the most fun gameplay, so it's best for last. The thing with this game is that consequent runs are just shorter, so it ain't that bad. It's not like it's a modern ys with 50 hours per run anyway.

Hoy Shru. Ys Origin is fantastic. The eShop description says it's one of the best action RPGs of all time, which reminds me a little of Kanye West saying Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time! Anyway, hope you enjoy Ys Origin. I really wanna play that again sometime, actually.

Yeah, I want to say that this is paced much better than the original trilogy. I don't really miss the investigations.

lol famous last words, that game has the exact same pacing of PW1 so prepare yourself for a really unnecessarily long last episode

but if you're liking the game I have good news, the sequel is waaaaaaay better, and the gimmick of that game is so cool, it'd be my favorite gimmick if I didn't like apollo's bracelet so much

I tried Origami King some time ago but couldn't stand the handholding. I felt like the combat tutorials repeated at least four times and even in the overworld that stupid Olivia wouldn't stop getting out of Mario's pocket to describe what just happened. Stuff like "Oh, hey! Looks like the lever you pushed just moved the water to the other side. Hm... Maybe we can take advantage from that?"

This feels uncharacteristically polished for Sonic Team

lol that's just mean, sonic team is the game freak of sega, they make really great games but the moment they have to do a main sonic game it's garbage because they probably don't give them enough time to do them

If you dig the premise of Fuga, I've got a recommendation for ya - you ever hear of the manga/anime, Bokurano: Ours? It is my personal all-time favourite. The premise is that like a group of middle schoolers are chilling at the beach on their summer vacation, and they find a cave with an old man inside that invites them to play a game he's allegedly created. Next thing they know, they're the pilots for a mech called Zearth, protecting Earth from invaders... from alternate Earths. And uh, well... Zearth is kind of sort of... run off the lifeforce of the children, meaning every time it's the turn for a pilot to take the helm, they will be giving their life up to protect their home universe from destruction.

It's existentially dreadful and I love it. I'm fairly certain the creators of Fuga actually were inspired in part by it. Good work on keeping the kids alive so far though! I can't wait to dig into Fuga myself one day.

Yep, basically Ys was the story of Adol trying to get to Africa because it's considered a mostly unexplored continent, but shit happens and the romans are having a war so he has to take several detours on the way there. Ys Seven is the story of Adol finally getting to Africa, and to me it divides very clearly new ys from older ys games.

Newer ys games are really focused on story and dialogue, and that makes them way longer than older titles; what was a 10 hours experience is now getting longer and longer, seven was 30 hours long and the average is 40+ now. All of them feature a party system, which makes the games a joke difficulty wise, because NPCs can't ever die and you can switch between them whenever you want, and then revive your main character if he dies. This also means that enemies have way more HP, and the bosses, which were Ys strongest point due to how incredibly well balanced they were, are now just boring HP sponges in a faster tales of game. The irony that they finally introduce a guard system in ys games, but they remove the shield from Adol's design.

And to me personally, it has also lost that charm that ys had that Adol was just a regular person with a sword instead of some kind of Chosen One with special powers.

Man, Mana Khemia 1 has to be one of the most depressing RPGs I've ever played. Iris 3 is kinda grim too, but MK1 takes it to another level. Mana Khemia 2 has the best music and gameplay in the series imo, but the characters are insufferable. Hope you have fun with them though!

Sakuna has been INCREDIBLE. What a good game. I've just been playing it very slowly because I suck at games where I have to do some kind of resource management and it stresses me even though the game never punishes you whatsoever. But man, I've been enjoying it so much, it's been a while since I found a game so charming. This is the kind of game that I thought was lost nowadays. The rice growing system is incredibly detailed and you really have to do everything step by step, there are no "game-like" shortcuts, you HAVE to do every step involved in farming rice. The gameplay is simple and fun, and I really love the music, characters and the story so far. I really have no complains.

Oh yeah, all of .hack is just 1 game divided in 4. Truly the episodic format before it was a trend, 4 parts at full price. It's not more than 40 hours total either, so it's the same as a regular RPG. Nothing even changes between games, it's the same battle system, same items, same magic, you just get better gear. Truly scummy.

edit: just a reminder that the previous atelier to rorona isn't iris 3 but mana khemia 2, both mana khemia are actual numbered atelier entries (A9 and A10)

Ys I is such a good game, it's really short, the combat system is fun, the music is incredible, the story is simple but engaging and the feeling of adventure is just so on point. I just really like the concept of here have a sword and you're nothing special really go do your thing. a shame the newer ys games are just kiseki action rpgs so they absolutely killed everything I loved about this series

Sorry for taking so long to reply, and thank you for all the info on Tron Bonne. Sounds like a very fun game! I'll be sure to give it a try sometime soon.

And since you've mentioned disliking Phantom Hourglass' touch controls, I need to say I really wish we'd get rereleases of games such as Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Sonic Rush Adventure, Kid Icarus Uprising, Mario 64 DS, FFTA2, Heroes/Children of Mana, DQIX, and more. It's insane how many DS/3DS gems are still stuck with cursed control schemes and low resolution, and yet we only seem to get rereleases of games that don't need it as much. Quite frustrating.

smh my head what a shit taste

you know I should replay it and do aurica's route, I never did it because I didn't like how she basically rejected everyone constantly, I know she has problems but yeah it was hard to like her. It's even worse after doing misha's route, because it feels like the canon route no matter what lol in fact not doing her route just seems like betraying her because LYNER IS A STUPID IDIOT WITH MEMORY PROBLEMS, how the fuck can you be so obsessed with becoming a knight and not remember why you wanted to be one to begin with

You should play ar tonelico 2 even if the plot is a slog sometimes, I feel AT1 has better songs but AT2 has the better OST, and even so AT2's songs are pretty good too. But the main reason to play it is the battle system, it's really fun and I haven't seen anything like that in any other game. That being said, it's even easier than ar tonelico 1's. Although honestly, I remember AT1's battle system fondly because it was pretty easy but the last boss was actually super hard for me. It was a time when I didn't read guides nor did s so I probably didn't have the best gear nor the correct levels (I'm always underleveled), and that was the first and probably only game where that "what if I need it later" syndrome for items actually worked, I really did use all the items I never used in the whole game lol

I began playing Dark Cloud 2 and I'm very skeptical of how it's going. It's been hours and there's still no sign of Georamas. However, meanwhile, the game wants me to run around the town taking pictures of specific stuff I have to use to invent items I can't progress through the dungeon without. And it's not just taking pictures and matching them; it seems like you have to actually farm the materials too. So I suppose the game is going to force me to replay floors I've already been through before I can progress. The weapon system is a lot simpler but I already miss being able to experiment around with weapons (especially if I have to replay floors anyway) so I'm not sure I like the trade-offs. They don't feel much like actual improvements so far

Also, no Dran's Feather for now. I do feel like the floors are smaller, but it'd still be neat to have something similar to Dran's Feather nonetheless. Maybe this is just a slow start and things get a lot better, but this does make me less excited. Anyway, just thought I'd share my first impressions with you.

Edit: After some research, I've come across info that makes me feel like I'm not going to like how Georama plays on this sequel nonetheless:
"The Georama system (a system in which the player can "build" the world by placing different parts) has been completely revamped from the sequel, allowing the player to create new Georama parts by transforming different items into the desired parts. However, it makes the system needlessly complicated and difficult [...] Level-5 tried fixing something that wasn't broken by revamping the Georama system".
So it sounds like the invention/camera mechanics also play a part on Georama.

By the way, how does The Misadventures of Tron Bonn compare to Megaman Legends? I've tried Legends a couple of times but didn't try hard enough to get used to the controls. Misadventures of Tron Bonn does look like a lot of fun, though.

Lyner's idiocy is indeed epic lol The protags from the second game on are much better in that regard, even if 2's is too much of a stiff and Ar no's co-protag has amnesia.

AT2s story drags, I think because the story focuses on the characters themselves (there's a lot of reading/scenes that bog down the pace), rather than the goings on in the world at large. It really puts the characters interactions under a microscope, some of which is hilarious. Also, beware the bugged boss fight in the localized version. On the plus side, the battle system in 2 is something special.
