GAMING IS DEAD. ▼
Where to begin on why gaming is horrible now, and may never recover. First off, developers realize that kids will buy literally ANYTHING. Epic Games has never released a game that is even nearly playable, every game they release is a glitch filled mess (Kind of like Bethesda.) that has to be updated frequently to even create a chance for the game to be played. However, even though Epic Games has released 0 playable games to date, they ship millions of copies in the first week.
Second, Limited Editions/Collector's Editions are the biggest scam in the entire industry. I will refer back to Epic Games, with Gears of War 3 (Really Black Ops 2 but whatever), they released a 150 dollar limited edition of their unplayable game that came with a statue, a flag, and a silly worthless cog + in game content. Let's break down the cost of this package.
Game - 60 Dollars (Really should be 20-30)
Statue - 10 Dollars (Todd McFarlane releases statues that are 10 times the quality of this and larger for 40+ dollars, Epic Games attempted to treat their piece of shit statue as a Todd McFarlane quality, it was not.)
Cog - Worthless
Flag - 10 Dollars
In-Game Content - Worthless because it was already on disc, and if it wasn't on disc it was purposefully left off the disc.)
Being very generous, this package was worth 80 dollars but Epic Games put a 150 dollar price tag on it and kids still fucking bought it. My god.
Continuing on, the third way games have fallen is through downloadable content. Games like Gears of War 3 left out fucking weapon skins and charged people real life money for this shit, THERE IS MORE FUCKING WEAPON SKINS FOR DOWNLOAD ON LAUNCH DAY THEN THERE WAS IN THE ACTUAL GAME. Companies also release half-assed side missions (Mass Effect being a HUGE offender) for 5-10 dollars. The Mass Effect 2 downloadable content, Lair of the Shadow Broker, is a great example of this. Bioware charged 10 dollars for a 2 hour downloadable chapter. I typically say that if you get an hour out of every dollar it is worth it, well there is no way anyone is ever going to get 10 hours out of these shitty DLC chapters these piece of shit developers release. Sometimes the developer is such an asshole they put the content on the DLC chapters on the disc and then charge 10 dollars even though you already bought the fucking game that already has the shitty chapter on it (Kind of like Epic Games, who have never made an "epic" game, locking weapon skins even though they're on disc, with Gears of War 3 they also had the first map pack on disc and one of the DLC maps was in a FUCKING TRAILER BEFORE THE GAME EVEN CAME OUT!!!)
A true contribution to the fall of gaming belongs to Nintendo's Wii console. What one may say about the Wii's quality is irrelevant, it is indisputable that the motion gaming revolution destroyed the core of gaming. We see tacky gimmicks spawned every month, from Microsoft's Kinect to Sony's newly announced, Wonder Book, these top game companies now are finding ways to create unplayable games in a new light. Nintendo is to blame partly for this downfall, but if Microsoft and Sony wouldn't have copied what Nintendo originated with Kinect and Playstation Move, we may be seeing more playable games then we are seeing now.
Lastly, Call of Duty established the end of all games. With the huge success of Modern Warfare 2, developers then realized they did not have to try. They realized they could rip off Call of Duty, or make the same game for decades, it really does not matter. Kids will still buy their game no matter how unplayable it is. Also most games, no matter what genre, try to rip off Call of Duty in some way. It wasn't Activision's fault, it wasn't Infinity Ward's fault, it was these shitty developers who seized this opportunity in order to establish a connection between the human mind and manipulate it in order to force kids to play their unplayable games.
