It's all in the name of making your unfinished percentage higher, and guilting you into playing games you already own instead of buying new titles.

Also, I believe you're supposed to mark games you haven't started yet (e.g. Halo 3) as unfinished, and not null. Null is really for game duplication and collections. There's an ongoing debate about this, though.
