Is the extended much better? Because I tried watching the first Lotr in extended for the first time and I couldn't get through it.

You should definitely play it. I didn't know about the book it was based on, but I'm going to watch Apocalypse Now for sure because of it. The story is just... something else. Make sure you don't spoil anything for yourself though.
