Super Mario Bros.
A defining platformer for the industry at large that's still engaging with some imperfections in the momentum mechanics & late-game difficulty spikes.

Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection (Prehistoric Edition): Jurassic Park - Part 2: The Chaos Continues
Changing toward an action-platformer is an appreciated SNES shift; however, the lack of dino focus & half timed missions does hamper the enjoyment.

Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection (Prehistoric Edition): Jurassic Park
Deceptively pleasing on presentation, the overall lack of direction, sprite art removal & other missing 'QoL' features make this an inferior port.

I agree that the tutorial fight is kind of absurd, in that it's so hard it artificially suggests the rest of the game is going to be this insurmountable challenge when, overall, I think the game is a lot more player-friendly than most Soulslike games out there...for instance, it wasn't nearly as difficult as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or Nioh 2 for me. I definitely had a harder time with the first half of the game, so some of the bosses like Aoye (the bull/cow-like thing) and the Corrupted Eunuch gave me quite a bit of grief. By the time I got to the second half of the game, I was pretty powered up from doing all the submissions and was so in the habit of summoning other players that I didn't really encounter any roadblocks.

I would have been fine if the game had been 10 or 12 missions instead of 16, as I think the game ran out of ideas and enemy types before you reached the end. That was one thing I noticed, playing Nioh 2 right after—Nioh 2 did a better job of having more enemy types and more meaningful loot. I found in Wo Long that once I had sufficiently upgraded a piece of early game equipment, I rarely found anything better...I think I ended up using three swords over the course of the whole game, whereas in Nioh 2 I was constantly finding new and better loot. Still, I found the parry system in Wo Long incredibly satisfying and the Three Kingdoms setting is great fun. It's definitely one of my favorite action games of the last few years.

I did think Wo Long could have been a little shorter, it kind of ran out of steam towards the end, but I enjoyed most of the boss fights. Did you have a couple that you particularly didn't enjoy?

Hi there. It's always nice to meet another Backlogger. I've reciprocated your multitap add.

Looking through your list of 5-star games, I see quite a few familiar names that show up in my list as well (e.g. MGS series, ICO series, Demon's Souls, etc.), as well as a few more that I suspect may end up on my list once I actually get around to playing them.

I'm sure I'll be seeing you around.
Well then. Shall we? My dear consort, eternal.
