I wish these were divided into episodes like Doom. It'd make long gaming sessions easier to digest and have a better sense of fulfillment.

Oh yeah, for sure - to be honest, I was never super intrigued by who the mystery man might be anyway for some reason, and while the reveal was a little out of left field, it wasn’t super satisfying. And also agreed on Sasha’s fake out death - while I was happy she didn’t kick the bucket (my Rhys had a blatant crush on her), I agree that it could have been handled better. Even so, no one can hold a candle to best girl(?) Gortys!

I guess I could have phrased that better haha - I just wasn’t a huge fan of how regardless of which options you pick as a response for Clem, it doesn’t really seem to alter your relationship with any of the other characters much, or if it did, they all died before anything meaningful came out of the conflict anyway. The main exception probably being the final showdown with Kenny and Jane. Maybe it was just the fact that Clem didn’t really seem to show any growth as a character compared to S1 - even though the season could have ended in a few DRASTICALLY different directions (which seems to not have mattered much by S3 anyway?), it was just weird that she didn’t really do much as a character in S2 (though to be fair, the writing was so spotty that no one really did except maybe Kenny). It could just be my play style too, compared to Tales or TWAU, where I typically had the option to have the MC start as a bit more of a morally gray character who had the opportunity to develop thanks to their journey. Or I’m just projecting haha. In any case, here’s hoping the last season can course correct for the grand finale - some of the Batman S2 staff is on board so I’m trying to stay cautiously optimistic!

Nah, I'm not really into SOL much either. Definitely prefer the more sci-fi exposition heavy too. Still, I suppose I could check it out later for completion, but it's definitely not a priority atm. Thanks.

Yeah, the beginning of S;G is pretty dense with that kinda stuff, which I personally enjoy but can see why others think is slow. I still have some issues with the pacing too (particularly Faris and Luka’s chapters slowing things to a crawl) but for the most part I liked the VN a lot better. And yeah, I had the same issue with Kurisu (maybe to a lesser extent since I did enjoy her role in the movie), but she does get a lot better developed in the game.

I think what I liked about Gaige was that it was so unique - at least it was when I went with the Anarchy skill tree, having that immense power but having to constantly work for it felt so rewarding. But yeah, there’s so much variety between the different characters that I’m sure a playthrough would be like a whole new experience!

Indeed, Tales is pretty similar to Firefly, though I’d say Tales leans a bit more towards comedy on the sliding scale of comedy-drama than Firefly does. But you’re right, jokes and plot aside, the writing for the cast is SO well done in comparison to most of Telltale’s more recent output that it’s very easy to get invested with the entire group, especially now that you’ve met the incomparably adorable Gortys. If there was one weakness, it’d probably be that most of the villains outside Vasquez weren’t SUPER memorable, but even then, those two mercenary guys that keep showing up were pretty fun too.

Coincidentally, I kind of lost interest in Clem’s story throughout S2, based in part on the fact that they made her personality almost TOO malleable coming off of S1, so it kind of made her feel a bit more… generic? I hardly remember any of the characters from S2 anyway though, so I’m faulting the writing at large for that one. Hopefully they’ve got the Batman team on duty for the final season.

As someone who thought the anime of Steins;Gate was good but overrated, I’d say the VN is definitely better! It still has the same awful pacing in the latter half, but the paranoia and technobabble in the first part are on point. I’m actually enjoying S;G0 more so far, at least plot-wise, though I have to admit that the pacing somehow got even worse, not to mention that some of the timeline divergences make absolutely zero sense this time around.

I mean, I don't really play online ever anyway lol - 99% of the multiplayer I do is local, so I never used Skype much anyway, except for school. Even in forums I'm more of a lurker... But hey, you never know, maybe an actual verbal discussion type thing will be different - I missed the timeframe for that link (oops sorry), but I’ll let you know again if I ever feel like giving it a try! Though probably not until I get around to Root Double, which… could be a while.

Very interesting! I’m pretty sure my laptop still can’t run BL2 (well), but I’m very interested to give the DLC a shot now! What class did you go for, btw? I was a Mechromancer and it was probably some of the most fun I’ve had in an FPS! And it looks like you’re enjoying Tales too - enjoy that one, the writing actually manages to stay on point through the whole season, it’s easily my favorite Telltale game!

Ah geez, that’s not at all encouraging considering the recent... expansion in the size of my backlog. It’s unlikely that I’ll get to Root Double for a while, but I’ve heard almost unanimous praise for it, so I look forward to it! But hell, even the Steins;Gate duology has been taking me months, so who knows when I’ll have the time and motivation to get through something even longer!

Discord sounds interesting though - I haven’t tried it before, and again, likely won’t for a while, but I’ll take it just to see! Thanks!

I don’t recall if I ever played any of the BL2 DLC… If memory serves, I finished the main game just before I started school and became limited to only my laptop, which didn’t run it very well. I’ve heard most of it is actually pretty entertaining though, unlike the original’s! Have heard mixed things about Pre-Sequel as well, but it seems like at the very least the gameplay stayed intact, even if the writing and/or level design didn’t.

Sorry you didn’t like Cuphead! I kind of figured that might be the case though, since almost all of the gameplay footage I’ve actually seen was of boss battles. I guess if anything that just lends more support to my plan to wait for a heavy sale!

Eh, I’d say the Higurashi spoilers in Umineko are very vague and out of context - I played them in opposite order too, and didn’t feel like anything was ruined for me. The main connection is that a few eventually major characters in Umineko are essentially shout-outs to Higurashi characters.

Make sure to pace yourself either way though - both are solid 80+ hour endeavors, depending on your reading speed! I thought the first episode of Higurashi was by far the best, though I doubt that’s a popular opinion. Umineko on the other hand, takes a while to get started, but reaches much higher heights by the end. It’s your call!

Btw, totally agreed about Borderlands 2 being vastly superior to the original, and now you can jump into Tales, which, despite the lack of “gameplay”, is both my favorite entry in the series and my favorite Telltale game! (though TWD S1 is up there)

Hahaha - mine was actually pretty much the inverse of what I have now when I was using a God of War theme, so we probably had almost the exact same palette!

And thanks! So far so good, I remembered how bad I am at Bayonetta, but at least I know how to play (somewhat) without mostly button mashing now!

On your end - UMINEKO!! Not to draw up the VN debate again, but even though it can be a bit cringe-worthy at times (the very beginning of Episode 1 notoriously so IMO), the epic (for lack of a better term) is one of the pinnacles of the genre. Hope you enjoy!

Treasure Hunter: 1000+ games
I wanted to try and keep the 5/5 section limited mostly to my favorite games of all time. There's a lot of 4/5 games I like just as much, or at least nearly as much, as the few I gave 5/5.

At one point there were 20-30 games at that level, but when I looked at them all there were a few games on that list that I knew I liked more than the others so I decided to make it a more clear distinction. Brigandine, Radiata Stories, Tetris, Age of Wonders, Tactics, Ogre, Suikoden V, Scorched Earth, Final Fantasy 9, Bubble Bobble, Valkyrie Profile, Twisted Metal Black, Secret of Mana and any number of games from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition series as well as a handful of others I'm not thinking of off the top of my head would be a 9/10 in an X/10 system, but there's no 4.5 option.

Ah yeah, I guess I thought it was just an enhanced port or something to phones back in the day. Though I guess then it wouldn’t really make much sense to release it separately in that case haha.

A killer7 re-release or remake would be stellar, but I kinda doubt it would happen - seems a bit unlikely that Grasshopper and Capcom would work together again now if they haven’t for so long, and afaik it’s not like The Silver Case was that successful anyway?

That’s interesting - do you know if 25th Ward is a remake of the first or an actual sequel? I was under the impression it was the former, but it appears it may actually be the latter. In any case, whether or not FS&R has a good story or not, the gameplay was just so frustratingly incomprehensible that I couldn’t bear getting further. It was only like $10 when I got it though, and I’m pretty sure I sold it back for the same, so no huge loss.

My real interest in the older Suda games in the first place pretty much stems entirely from killer7, since it has the snazzy aesthetic down, but also has bearable, if forgettable, gameplay and an actual nuanced story and characters - though to be honest, a lot of it can be abstract and might require some additional reading, which I’m iffy about. It’s definitely an experience worth having though, assuming it’s even accessible at this point…

Ha, I completely believe that. Suda definitely has some great ideas now and then, but a lot of the time he can be too quirky for his own good, especially in his earlier stuff. I tried to get into FS&R back in the day, since I enjoyed killer7 so much, but the controls and gameplay mechanics were so obtuse I don’t think I made it more than 15 minutes before calling it quits. I would have hoped that the Silver Case remake made some modern concessions, though that doesn’t seem to be the case…

Interestingly, and I may be wrong on this, but at least the PS4 version seems to have been done by NISA, who also did the Danganronpa localizations… which are also somewhat known for their gratuitous language, seemingly to come off as more "mature" (though given this mostly involves high school students, it’s probably justified).

Your description also definitely reminded me of Va-11 Hall-A even before your mentioned it, hahaha. Repetitiveness is a pretty common feature of VNs anyway though I feel like, usually as an excuse for padding, but I’m not totally against it if it has a tangible and worthwhile payoff. That said… I think my interest has waned for now, especially with my rather limited schedule as of late. But thanks for the impressions!

Thoughts on The Silver Case? I'm a sucker for detective VNs, but Suda51 misses about as often as he hits - for every killer7 there's a Flower, Sun and Rain.
