This is exactly what I wanted from the first game; a heavier focus on story and lore. That being said, I hate that dropping into someone else's game moves along your own single player campaign. It should only carry over weapons when you get back to single player, not your level and story progress.

I wanted to try and keep the 5/5 section limited mostly to my favorite games of all time. There's a lot of 4/5 games I like just as much, or at least nearly as much, as the few I gave 5/5.

At one point there were 20-30 games at that level, but when I looked at them all there were a few games on that list that I knew I liked more than the others so I decided to make it a more clear distinction. Brigandine, Radiata Stories, Tetris, Age of Wonders, Tactics, Ogre, Suikoden V, Scorched Earth, Final Fantasy 9, Bubble Bobble, Valkyrie Profile, Twisted Metal Black, Secret of Mana and any number of games from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition series as well as a handful of others I'm not thinking of off the top of my head would be a 9/10 in an X/10 system, but there's no 4.5 option.

Ah yeah, I guess I thought it was just an enhanced port or something to phones back in the day. Though I guess then it wouldn’t really make much sense to release it separately in that case haha.

A killer7 re-release or remake would be stellar, but I kinda doubt it would happen - seems a bit unlikely that Grasshopper and Capcom would work together again now if they haven’t for so long, and afaik it’s not like The Silver Case was that successful anyway?

That’s interesting - do you know if 25th Ward is a remake of the first or an actual sequel? I was under the impression it was the former, but it appears it may actually be the latter. In any case, whether or not FS&R has a good story or not, the gameplay was just so frustratingly incomprehensible that I couldn’t bear getting further. It was only like $10 when I got it though, and I’m pretty sure I sold it back for the same, so no huge loss.

My real interest in the older Suda games in the first place pretty much stems entirely from killer7, since it has the snazzy aesthetic down, but also has bearable, if forgettable, gameplay and an actual nuanced story and characters - though to be honest, a lot of it can be abstract and might require some additional reading, which I’m iffy about. It’s definitely an experience worth having though, assuming it’s even accessible at this point…

Ha, I completely believe that. Suda definitely has some great ideas now and then, but a lot of the time he can be too quirky for his own good, especially in his earlier stuff. I tried to get into FS&R back in the day, since I enjoyed killer7 so much, but the controls and gameplay mechanics were so obtuse I don’t think I made it more than 15 minutes before calling it quits. I would have hoped that the Silver Case remake made some modern concessions, though that doesn’t seem to be the case…

Interestingly, and I may be wrong on this, but at least the PS4 version seems to have been done by NISA, who also did the Danganronpa localizations… which are also somewhat known for their gratuitous language, seemingly to come off as more "mature" (though given this mostly involves high school students, it’s probably justified).

Your description also definitely reminded me of Va-11 Hall-A even before your mentioned it, hahaha. Repetitiveness is a pretty common feature of VNs anyway though I feel like, usually as an excuse for padding, but I’m not totally against it if it has a tangible and worthwhile payoff. That said… I think my interest has waned for now, especially with my rather limited schedule as of late. But thanks for the impressions!

Thoughts on The Silver Case? I'm a sucker for detective VNs, but Suda51 misses about as often as he hits - for every killer7 there's a Flower, Sun and Rain.

Ehh, the female characters were better, but that’s not exactly a high bar to clear. Couldn’t stand Dorothy, holy crap, couldn’t make me click faster through dialogue whenever she was on screen. Sei and Stella were fine, if completely forgettable in the sense that I can’t tell you much about them besides a few superficial traits and their basic backstories. I liked Alma decently by the end, but that might have been because she was the only one who seemed to have something of an ongoing plot in the background. And in the end, that’s kind of what it came down to - I felt like a spectator through the whole game, never really super invested in any of the characters because the writing was almost exclusively tell instead of show.

The problem with gay ghost girl (lol does she have a name?) is that, meta narrative aside, she didn’t really serve much purpose despite all of the teasing towards her existence. Though I guess given my other criticisms, and with the lack of a plot, there wasn’t really a purpose for her to serve anyway. I’m fine with metafiction - in fact I think it’s a really interesting plot device when used properly, like in MGS2, or more recently a certain other VN which shall go unnamed since I see you haven’t played it yet. Like, kinda similarly, I thought it was a pretty dumb inclusion in VLR, since it didn’t really add anything to the core story of the game, meaninglessly brought up more questions than answers, and in the end it didn’t go anywhere either, since ZTD completely dropped that plot thread. I guess it was kind of fitting that one of the bar patrons was a Costanza expy, because it seems like the dev team at least ackowledged that it was a game about nothing. But without much nuance to most of the characterization (Jill thinks someone is weird, gets to know them, they’re not so bad, repeat), and with most (if not all) of the attempts at humor falling flat, it just didn’t work for me.

Haha, and I would’ve been fine with nothing but dialogue as a source of character development and all that, the problem was that no one was particularly interesting…? Aside from the main bar trio (who I admittedly liked, though they were pretty underexplored) and the corgis, pretty much every other character that I didn’t actively dislike just seemed forgettable. I did at least put in an EFFORT to enjoy it (I did get the good ending, not that it’s hard), but it felt like a losing battle.

And unless I completely missed something, there were a couple of plot threads that didn’t go anywhere - the main one being gay ghost girl… like, I know there was foreshadowing of her existence and all, but… so what? She didn’t end up doing anything afaik. All in all, fascinating concept that I just think could have been done so much better, especially considering how much better both VNs and “tedium simulators” like Papers Please have been.

2/5 probably might be a bit harsh (closer to 2.5 / 5 for me), but that means to me that it was decent, but with too many flaws to ignore. I can’t deny the fact that I frequently fell asleep while playing though, and was pretty bored most the times I didn’t. And like you said, I didn’t give two shits about Jill’s relationship dramas. I did enjoy the OST a lot… but not enough for me to bump it up a whole grade because of it.

Is it worth sticking with VA-11 Hall-A? I like the music and aesthetic, but it's so borriiing. (I just finished Chapter 1, I think...)

I definitely plan on playing UC4 but I have a thing about playing these games in order. I really want to see the story, as boring as it seems so far. It just seems like a cop-out if I quit and just watch the cutscenes on Youtube.

Oh trust me, it’s not from lack of wanting. Unfortunately, I have board exams for medical school in almost exactly two months now (aka probably the most important exams of my life), so I can’t really afford more than minor distractions at the moment.

From what I remember, demon negotiations are almost entirely random, though there are occasionally a FEW indicators, or at least themes across species. Though that might be tied to arcana now? Don’t worry though, it’s pretty much something you just have to get used to. If nothing else, they’re certainly entertaining!

Haha, thanks! As of now, I think NieR has somehow been my only actual this year so far? Which has taken quite some discipline, considering how great this year is looking so far, as far as releases go. P5 is definitely first on my list when boards are over though - I just hope I can make some progress getting through it before Danganronpa V3.

Oh, haha. No worries - I literally just finished it and loved it! Not bad, considering it was even on sale for only $20 when I got it!

Also, Until Dawn is great - I played through the entire thing with my brother in like one night. Good timing too, now that Rami Malek has an Emmy and all, hehe.

Yeahhhh I’m over it. I just finally got an email from Amazon addressing it a few hours ago, and even that failed to give an actual window for shipping, just a confirmation for further delaying it, so screw it. Just gonna get the digital Vita version and sell the retail copy once it arrives in however many weeks.

Heading over to Hawaii for a week or so to visit my Dad’s family, and of course, go to the beach, haha. Obviously my time will probably be occupied with other things than ZTD, but I’ll have the plane ride(s) and before bed at least. And considering I played 999 for the first time while visiting back when it first came out, it should make for a nice way of bookending the series.

I hear you, but in this day and age those are hardly selling points - I’m sure both of the pre-order bonuses will be online within the week haha, either via YouTube or Reddit or something. At this point I’m just worried about my Vita version watch getting cancelled since my debit card expires at the end of the month, and I’ve heard some people getting their orders cancelled when they updated their information.

But yeah, at this point, I’m thinking that for convenience’s sake I’ll probably just go with the Vita version too. I’d have to run the Steam version in a virtual machine anyway, and I don’t really want to deal with all the hassle of messing with settings and such when I could just play it on Vita or PSTV. Besides, I’m going on vacation next week anyway, so I may as well have that to do on the plane!
