As much as I wanted to keep playing the games I know and have beaten in the past, I felt it necessary to start something that I haven't played or beaten before to experience it, finally. The combat in this game is interesting. The stun locks are triggering, but overall, I'm enjoying this game.

Oh, yes! I absolutely loved Valkyria Chronicles 4. I've finished it with the exception of The Two Valkyria DLC. I couldn't say enough good things about it.

Have I played Valkyria Revolution? No, after hearing nothing but bad things about it, I skipped it entirely. I've only played the first Valkyria Chronicles and Valkyria Chronicles 4, both outstanding games.

Consider Yourself a Hero: Majority of games are beaten
People sleep on Lucina. Marth has been my boy for nearly two decades, but in Sm4sh I preferred Lucina. The speed of the game overall made having to worry less about precision nice compared to how high-octane Melee can get. I need to play around with Corrin some, I used him/her (I prefer her) for their Classic mode but that's all.

For casual play, yeah, Marth and Roy are about the same. A lot of "Roy is bad" is runoff from the competitive scene where Roy's considered among the worst, bottom 5 usually. Competitive Melee requires such a wealth of technical knowledge though that "Roy is bad" probably doesn't mean the same thing to a competitive player than to the majority of the playerbase - I could go on about his frame data and such, but the average person wouldn't know or care about any of that. Frankly, me neither - I still played Roy competitively despite all that.

"Ah, P5. I really need to sit down and dig into that, but the older I get (and thus, the more responsibilities) the less time I have to sink into a 120 hour RPG anymore."

That's what scared me off for two years, and boy does it feel lame to lose my save 50 hours in lol. It was when I got into Monster Hunter and put it down after accumulating some 150 hours in two months that I decided I should finally give Persona 5 a fair chance. It was a blast when I did get into it, but definitely the sheer length still intimidates me. I could also do without the 5 hours of nothing I'll have to go through again at the start...

I'm gonna main Joker in Smash for at least a little bit for sure. I admit, when we first started getting weird 3rd Parties in Smash, I was a nay-sayer. I thought Ryu was pushing it, and Cloud was just ridiculous. Now, screw it, just add whoever, it's a party baby! Put Goku in you cowards.

The simple workaround was to use my primary Roy setup (who is quickly rising to my character of choice this time around), and just use Marth and Lucina as well. A bit dull to use three Fire Emblem characters, maybe, but I took the final bosses to town with that team. Ah well, I had fun either way and I can always go back and rock it with Pichu if I want lol

Speaking of characters, I had decided from the get-go that I wanted to use Roy in Adventure Mode. He was my favorite "bad" character in Melee, and I didn't get the Sm4sh DLC so he's still new to me. Imagine my surprise when he was the third to last character you unlock or so. Maybe what I should have done was create a Spirit loadout for each character I liked. More characters, more variety, hindsight is 20/20.

Smash has fallen out of the single-player spotlight for me now, and I think that's for the best. I had a fine time playing Adventure and Classic mode, but I think the frequent exposure to content I wasn't too hot on was making me less interested in the multiplayer, which I do think is excellent. I can live with an above average single-player experience I can ultimately ignore if it gets me the extremely good multiplayer.

Which is just as well. I need to replay 50 hours of Persona 5 now lol

Definitely agreed on your whole first paragraph. It wasn't bad, I had a largely good time, but it felt like it came just short of being really fun and it wouldn't have taken much to push it over. I'm a little harsher on it because of the implication that this is the Smash to rule them all - it seems like that's true for characters and stages, but not content.

Yeah, final battle was sweet, but also emblematic of that problem as well - when I was preparing, I didn't know that my Spirit loadout would apply to all 3 characters, so I went in really really suboptimally and had to give it a second try. Not a big deal, but just a sentence making that clearer would've made a "pretty good" experience into a potentially "great" experience.

Swapping spirits more probably would've made for a better experience, and I did that for a while, but after seeing how big the board was I decided that would be too tedious. I did rotate my Primaries semi-often, but mostly for linear improvements over old ones - switching from Alucard to Sirius so I could get a "Same Game Boost" on Marth for example. I tried to play with some weird setups, but yeah, I didn't understand them all and it seemed like just beefing my character's attack type was the best option.

Agreed. I completed every single battle up to the second of the three smaller zones at the end. My final count was around 545/615 - I stopped once I had a really powerful Primary of each color at level 99, and after that just fought Spirits I thought looked interesting or I'd like to have.

I like Classic Mode but not as much as it seems you do, but my reasons are the same. I wish they weren't repetitive, but what IS there is really creative, and adding co-op was a great idea. They're also all short and don't overstay their welcome, and are pretty rewarding.

All that being said, I think it's my favorite Smash. Maybe I don't love all the single player, but I very much like the multiplayer. It's been the go-to on Saturdays for the past month now with no signs of slowing down.
