Oh that's so awesome, it was the same for me. I was a big DDR player, and I think DJMAX was my first time branching out into other rhythm games.

Interesting timing, just this past weekend I was testing my old Cobalt Flux DDR pad I've had since high school. A wire seemed to have broken in the cord. I was able to fix it a couple of years ago, but it still seemed like inputs weren't registering so I shoved it in a closet and forgot about it for a while. Anyway, recently I tried playing on a keyboard and noticed the same problems. Turns out it was my ancient copy of the StepMania.exe I had been floating around also since High School. I guess it didn't play nicely with Windows 10. Upgrade to StepMania5 and the 15+ year old dance pad lives again!

I've been thinking about rhythm games a lot in general lately. They seem to be the only genre I enjoy challenge in. Most anything else I'll always play on easy, and I'm not afraid to look anything up the moment I feel stuck or that I may be missing something. But rhythm games are interesting in that they don't really seem to take planning, strategizing (unless you're going for the tip-top of scoring systems and learn about how each games scores), etc. You just play, and you naturally get better from playing. Like learning to read a new language. It's really neat.

I also keep thinking lately maybe I should basically only play rhythm games so I can just abandon the backlog of long JRPG's. It sounds nice sometimes, but realistically I know I probably won't.

Haha, love your DJMAX Portable comment and glad you’re enjoying it. It was actually the game I got a PSP for. I never got that great at it, but always enjoyed playing. All this time later though I’ve put some time into DJMAX Respect and finally gotten a bit better.. but that one is even more brutal! No gear to help, and no “no fail / continue playing until end if fail” option X_x
