Persona 4 Arena
Bought it! Started story from Yukiko's PoV. Haven't fought yet!

Updated about 6 years ago

2018 - I don't do competitive fighters, not since MK2, but I've heard the story mode continues the P4 story and is awesome. This I have to see! Maybe a PS4 remaster someday? Update: Bought it! Started it! Story presentation so far is a bit disappointing; more video would've been nice! Still, excited to actually fight and see the story through.

Mass Effect (complete edition)
Replaying series on PC with texture mods (am a 360 Mass Effect vet). Kicks the 360 version’s butt but definitely behind the times. Still cool!

Updated about 6 years ago

☆★★★★ 2018 - A 360 Mass Effect vet, bought for PC. Good news is with modern hardware there are zero frame rate issues (a HUGE problem with the original). Other good news is K/M UI is a great help for gameplay. Bad news is the combat system is still quite clunky RPG-shooter merger... but decent on PC, unlike 360. It is a 3 or 4 out of 5. Higher end of that range if one does love that universe, which I do, with good reason. Ehhh... almost beating it now, must say *on PC* it surprisingly holds up.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
An all-time favorite game, with gorgeous missions and visuals and touching story and music. Beaten but certainly not with all secrets like FALKEN.

Updated about 6 years ago

★★★★★ 2018 - First see the predecessor, 04. This game is similar, except it solves main drawback: the lame mission objectives involving getting points in such-and-such time. Here, we get to aid a sea or land invasion, support a military parade, perform a Death Star-like run, select sub-missions.... Beautiful planes/environments, even these days (w/ 16:9 support). There is one HORRID canyon mission, sadly. The kicker? Touching story with cool licensed theme music (“Blurry”). Unique series: best ent

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Playing this as an "HD remaster" using the PCSX2 emulator. Sweet so far, very similar to magnum opus, AC5!

Updated about 6 years ago

I'm only a few missions in, but this baby is just like its predecessor, the near-masterpiece Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. The beautiful visuals enhanced by the PCSX2 emulator are a very nice plus. (Besides, save states to the rescue, if a mission gets too frustrating... no checkpoints in this game, boyz and girlz!)

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection: Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Beaten on Hard after original on Normal. Without the original's baggage and expectations from 2, this is super-fun.

Updated about 6 years ago

☆★★★★ 2018 - 60fps makes solid original worth playing again. This isn't all-time classic like 2, due to some story issues and far less awesome flow and level design, but the fights are still tons of fun, and the new mechanics (like grenade throwbacks) are sweet. While 3 was critically overrated, the game has now become ironically underrated: it's still a memorable and awesome game and shouldn't be consigned JUST to 2's shadow. Too many people call it a piece of junk now, which is serious overreaction.

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Beaten many times on Hard after Platinuming (including Crushing) the original. Could do Crushing sometime but no huge desire, as Hard is perfect.

★★★★★ 2018 - 60fps makes the GOTG original worth playing again, an unlimited # of times. Nothing wrong with the original, but 60fps makes 30fps Uncharteds for PS4 (4, Lost Legacy) actively frustrating.

Ratchet & Clank
It's fun and BEAUTIFUL especially with PS4 Pro. Not exactly must-play though! Just a nice time. Stuck on final boss, much harder than rest of game.

☆★★★★ 2018 - A hugely changed remake of the PS2 original, which I've never played. I also have PS3 R&C Future: ToD which is very similar that I sort of dropped. Haven’t beaten surprisingly hard last boss, but I immensely enjoyed game up to that point. Hopefully will finish soon.

Persona 5
Beaten once and loved it. Playing New Game+ a few months later because I felt drawn to it as an escape into another life.

★★★★★ 2018 - Persona 3 (FES, etc.): one of the best-written RPGs of all time. Starts slow and a little grindy though. Persona 4: Persona 3 level writing but less dark. Less grindy. Persona 4 Golden: Takes original to the NEXT F***ING LEVEL. Almost perfect game, emotionally beautiful. Persona 5: Even *more* content, even *more* visual style. A daring, political story. One of the most immersive (writing-wise) games ever. Must say battle system at *this* point is getting tiresome. New Game+ i

Horizon: Zero Dawn
Good progress made -- 1-2 walking towers, 2 machine-making factories -- but lost interest somehow. Day-to-day difficulty is somewhat discouraging?

Updated about 6 years ago

2018 - No rating yet due to only being 20% or so into the game (e.g., I have seen some medium-size machines but no huge ones like on the game cover). But so far I see a powerful Zelda-like experience with BEST visuals I have ever seen (when played on Pro), with the exception of unfortunately ubiquitous uncanny valley-populating dialogue sequences. The tough difficulty is fine but gets on my nerves; I think would be OK if I stopped fighting everything all the time. Will be back to this sometime.

God Of War (2018)
LET'S DO THIS!

Updated about 6 years ago

2018 - ON IT! It rules so far, but warning: the combat system is (a) not as flowing and immediately playable and fun as the previous God games (for example, you cannot jump and fight people in the air!!!); and (b) not all that fun until ~5-10 hours in, when a lot more moves have opened plus you get a certain sweet new weapon. Be a little patient! There's tons of awesomeness besides the combat though, so don't worry.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
In progress. This is an awesome technical and gameplay update to an already mechanically sweet FF game -- albeit with same story flaws as original.

Updated about 6 years ago

★★★★★ 2018 - When FF12 came out back in the day, it instantly became top 3 FF game for me. While not featuring to-die-for original story like 7 or old-school story charm like 9, mechanically speaking this HUGE game was incredibly brave and unflinching, refusing to rest on series' laurels (see FF XIII for counterexample... ugh). Sadly, the intricate story somehow dissolved near the end, but not before many memorable moments. MAJOR remaster adds new job system and near PS3-level visuals. 90+ type game.

Batman: Arkham Knight
Very fun but I wish I could increase image quality. Toddler son loves watching this.

Updated about 6 years ago

2018 - Impulse-bought due to Lego Batman film! I have outdated Arkham Asylum for PS3, barely touched, and missing City. But seems any order of play is OK, though the start of this game does make a reference to a rather major plot event from the end of City. So watch out for that.

Far Cry 5
Started it on launch day. BEAUTIFUL graphics and VERY nice open world, but must say the villains are repetitive and less intriguing than hoped for.

Updated about 6 years ago

2018 - So far -- 5 hours in -- this is another Far Cry. Of course the proof is in the pudding (gameplay variety), and I can't judge it yet. But I am not getting the butterflies of excitement like I did in 3's opening. I started 4 at some point and quit it randomly -- must say this game is extremely similar, just different setting -- so far.

☆★★★★ 2018 - It’s late 2017. The FULL game, a fan remake of 1998 Half-Life, is allegedly out later this year or early next. Yet I bought it (accidentally on sale for $8) in Early Access. But, it has been ready — the game minus the allegedly horrid last 20% of the original, which I hadn’t reached — since 2012! And it’s really amazing. Plays/looks JUST like major VALVe remake from ~2010 would. Stunning. Will wait coming-soon Xen remake which is said to be MAJOR. ...Why don’t marines re

2018 - I am only just getting into the thick of it, but so far this seems like a HUGE improvement on the whole series before it which was in a huge rut. I am only scratching the surface, and already the combat is just far far far more exciting than any previous game’s in series. Story appears focused, so far, and the present day interactive sequences are back (and I welcome them, personally). Nevertheless, there is still a bit of lack of focus. We will see how it pans out. Very promising so

Final Fantasy IV
About 1/2 through this thing, but I only played GBA on airplanes back then. Resume on GBA player on GameCube?!

Updated about 6 years ago

☆☆★★★ 2018 - I think I've played this enough to rate it, though I don't know how it ends yet. Maybe that'll raise it from 3 stars to 4, but it seems doubtful. This is a very solid-feeling old-school RPG. However, it's just a bit dated (no, I don't mean the graphics which are obviously old-school as hell). Battle system is less sophisticated than VI, for example, and story seems a bit childish compared to pathos of VI. It's kind of like VI, really, but not quite as good. 3/5 by modern standards.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD
Dipped a toe but I have done MGS too many times already. Very exciting addition of 60fps to the original’s shaky 30. 2018 toddler loves watching it!

Updated about 6 years ago

★★★★★ Read my glowing comments on MGS3: Subsistence. Now picture the muddy shaky 30fps... except on crisp HD with tons of AA, and at buttery 60fps. Best or 2nd best “classic” (pre-strategy Peace Walker and MGS V) game in the glorious series, now looking this gorgeous? Yes, please. I am coming back to this when I am feeling like A classic MGS. Unlike MGS2, or MGS1, this one is essentially a modern game to control, with a glorious self-contained story.

A wow-inducing remaster of an already stunning PS2 game, this is THE way to play MGS2 today. 2018 toddler loves watching it! SNAAAKE!!

Updated about 6 years ago

☆★★★★ MGS2 was controversial for its story, but I’ve always found it refreshingly post-modern (Google “driving off the map MGS2” for more). But you CANNOT argue with production values of PS2 original. It STILL looks photo-real in many places. At the time it was beyond amazing, visuals, details, sounds, movies. Amazing if short gameplay. And the story... has to be seen to be believed and not everyone’s cup of tea. (Yay 4 as sequel!) Remaster in HD/60fps is superb! The top camera is a bit dated

Final Fantasy XV: Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto
I played the linear sequences up to the open world part. I stopped -- not because it was bad but due to other distractions. Should get back to it.

Updated about 6 years ago

This was promising in its linear section, and someday I'll get back into this and play it to its conclusion. Certainly it was promising, both in story content for Prompto's interesting characterization and mechanically with the shooter elements (Prompto is a gun wielder, unlike Noctis, the main character of the base game). A certain kick-ass woman from the main story makes welcome appearances to help out Prompto.
