For a start, there's a disconnect between what the story wants to be. There's beheadings and violent content, yet there are also scenes where characters talk about 'missing their mommy' and celebrate 'sushi!' (which in itself feels very fanfictiony - they sure love their Japanese food in that community).
In addition, the script is CONSTANTLY referencing things that either didn't happen or were shown off screen. At one point a character says 'remember what happened to my ship in the valley!' to my character.... but as far as I knew, nothing happened. When I met him, he didn't have a ship. There's a whole sideplot about the main characters being part of some organisation and then leaving, but it's mentioned maybe 3 times, is never explained properly and never recieves any resolution either. It just seems to be an excuse to introduce a 'badass anti-hero' Shadow The Hedgehog character to be honest.
The game also features some really forced emotional moments, which are terribly written, with the character motivations poorly explained. Every character you encounter is basically antagonistic in some way, and multiple of them in ways that don't make sense - I was sent as an ambassador to a foreign land, who then sent me back as an ambassador - and the original guys arrested me...for some reason? All of it is hampered even more by the 'not awful, but still very high-school drama club level voice acting.
I'm normally not too sensitive to bad stories in games - they don't bother me. But this felt like some 50 shades of grey level stuff here - badly written fanfiction for an already badly written franchise that takes itself way, way too seriously.
The story also takes up about 1/3rd of the game. The gameplay is decent fun, I highly recommend sticking to Classic. It would have made me like the game a lot more if I'd never given it a chance to tell it's story I think, as sad as that is to say.
