To change your avatar/banner, you'd go to My Backloggery > Options > Page Theme. On that page, there's be a little field to type in a web address, and you just enter one that has an image you like on it (I usually save it Imgur first, and copy/paste that address). Avatars have to be 80x80, but it might resize it if it's too big; I'm not actually sure.

For colors, you do have to use the alphanumerical codes. But a lot of the time, I open Photoshop and use the eyedropper tool on a color I like, and just copy/paste that code. Saves me a lot of trouble trying to find just the right colors.
